Rover is Army.
Landy is civvy.
What he said ^^^

As a squaddy, you'd get beaten about the head with an 12" adjustable if you said "Landy".

I didn't realise it was a civvy thing though. I thought it was only the Crabs that called them 'Landies'
Strange that, I had a pongo say to me only last week that he'd have to come back with a Landy to pick up some bits....
He was translating for the civvy!

I wonder if that is a 6x6 or a tag axle.
I 'think' all the Carmichael fire tenders are 6x4 frown
My Brothers 6 x 6 is a Scotorn conversion is 6 x 6, I think they converted 9 & his is the only estate. It is X plated so 82.
I can't quite imagine how the new range rover would fare converted to a 6 legger fire appliance
@ tr7v8 It looks awesome, I'd post the 'shoped image I made, but I don't have an album to upload it in.

@ Hooli, all the Scottorn 6x6 conversions were estates, how many were converted is open to debate, some say 5 others 6 or 7, some say more. There don't appear to be any definitive records. AFAIK.

@ JumboBeef and AL5026, that's a Carmichael chassis, with body work probably by Gloucester Saro. The bulk of this conversion was for the RAF, with a few for the Royal Navy and a few to other customers, RAF and Royal Navy were all 6x4, not sure about the RAE versions, but the dark object between middle and rear wheels looks more like the exhaust than a prop to the third axle.
While most of these fire appliances were delivered new with 6x4, a good few have been converted to 6x6, there's several ways to do it.
After a bit of digging around the net I suspect that this maybe EPE750V.

That picture is at RAE Farnborough in front of the black sheds. Very sad as the sheds no longer exist. I worked there as an apprentice from 73-77 & then in Base Avionics workshops for another 8 months.

The vehicle was called an RRV (Rapid Response Vehicle), Farnborough had 2 of them.
The Black shed in the photo is still standing, the other shed was lost around 1968 after the Atlantic crash
at the Air show.

I still work at Farnborough, been here since 1982.

We had a 6 ×4 Range Rover fire tender at Lydden circuit , Ex RAF from Greenham Common , it used to escort cruise missile convoys.
It was an early model with a non baffled water / foam tank so needed to be treated with respect when cornering .
I think it is now in the Fire museum at Manston Airport .

I seem to recall the one at Honington rolled over doing a U-turn on the runway at just 6mph!

Thanks for that. Last time I was there was a couple of years ago to visit a company on site. Very sad as most of what I remember is gone.

Early J reg (1970) they went on sale but I don't ever recall seeing many J reg Cortina in the early 70s - maybe that was because of the strike ...

When did production start? - just before that laugh I remember my sister's boyfriend having a red one - that would have been an L or M reg most likely (that was in about 1976).
I once had a Cortina MK3 on a 'J'...was a 2000GXL reg RJL 762J...Can't remember original Colour but I repainted it in Red Oxide Primer in my Dads Garage and me and an Ex used to sleep in it sometimes...

There used to be a Jag XJ6 parked in front of a house in town years ago. It sat there for at least a decade - I don't know what became of it, but admiring it when young gave me my love of Jags.

I've often thought about knocking on the door to ask what became of it but I'm not sure it'll be the same occupants anymore.

Yes - saw a documentary about that - Ford supplied all the cars on condition the goodies used them!
There's a little bit of that in Minder, Authur with the Jag and Terry in the Capri!
Also the Professionals in their Escorts..

Authur was always misunderstood though - he always looked out for Terry.
Thought Bodie drove a Blue Capri and the Guv'nor (Gordon Jackson) had the Granada Consul... Can't remember Doyles...
Sweeney had Transit Mk2's also...Great Vans...Love to see one on here...Can remember them all piling out the back in their 'Raids'...

Blue Capri? Don't remember that.

For the first series ('77) British Leyland had supplied the cars. Various Rovers and Triumphs were prominent, including a yellow SD1 reputed to have also appeared in The New Avengers as Steed's car. Problems arose when BL wanted the cars back for press stuff when the producers wanted them for filming. Ford spotted the opportunity, subsequently supplying cars for use both on, and off screen, by the production company.

Cowley had a Granada Ghia, Bodie had a silver Capri 3.0S, and Bodie started off with the white Escort RS2000 in the '78 and '79 series, but switched to a gold Capri in the final two series.

I can understand nostalgically holding on to a decaying old Moggie or Beetle hoping that one day you'd get around to restoring it, but a Yugo 45??
