Good for you - and that's relevant to this thread because? confused
If you hadn't quoted me completely out of context it might make sense as it was in response to Lord Brett bemoaning the fact that he doesn't consider some of the cars in this thread to be classic, and that that title shouldn't be assigned to what he considers to be mundane cars.

Oops, I should have said what it was.

It's a 1985 190 2.3-16, with one owner and less than 80,000 milesbiggrin

The same model as this

Was at an auction a couple of weeks ago, there was a mint 2.5 16 that was a late entry.

Auction house had received few details, valued it simply as a 190 so it catalogued with an estimate of 1800-2500.

Was lovely, ended up going for 8 or 9 thousand.

Received a call about this last week, sat in a lockup since the original owner sadly passed away 8 years ago.

The lockup is now needed for another car, so it has been rescued wink
Looks like a last of the line W201 (a 190 series) - has the jumping wiper parking on the drivers side (so post '83) and the side repeater is just visible so it's prob a post '87 car. Headlamp wipers standard on the 2.6 or an extra on the others only usually after most other boxes have been ticked so probably a good spec on it.

In good order, these are very desirable and totally realistic as a daily. You wouldn't say that for pretty much any of it's 25 year old competitors.
Seeems to have wooden steering wheel and aftermarket alloys
Loaddddddddds of 190s and CEs on GSVIEW- it's as if they never went away !

Good spot Tali.

The wooden wheel is an Italvolanti and the alloys some old school TSWs.

It has the original steering wheel and alloys with it, so the after market bits will most likely be sold on.

May well be interested in the steering wheel, please let me know if and when you decide.

Sorry you've really lost me. I know what you said, I read it I justclipped it a bit so don't get try the old you quoted me "out of context" malarkey. smile I just can't see why you liking Fiats is at all relevant. I don't like old Escorts but that doesn't stop people considering them classics. Live and let live. I can't say I'm at all fussed about old Fiats but you are. i.e. so what?

p.s. Healeys and Triumphs are not exoitics hehe they're the sort of sports car me and my brother had as kids...

I've a four spoke wooden wheel that I got for mine but haven't fitted. According the ad it will fit the W124 and W126. Badge in the centre looks a bit shabs but the wheel itself seems nice quality.

Also have an AMG (Style?), wooden gear knob, don't know if genuine or not but looks the part.

Whoa!!! Whoa!!! Whoa!!!

Read my original post please!!!!!!

Quote: "Excuse my ignorance but can you tell me what it is about this particular car that makes it a classic??"

I never said this Merc wasn't a "classic" as I don't know what particular model it is etc and was seeking advice from those more au fait with these models.

However I stick with my opinion ( as you are quite welcome to stick with an opposite opinion ) that cars which were IMHO mundane and ste when new (e.g. Allegro, Marina etc ) don't suddenly become classics on their 25th anniversary.

It's an Italvolanti I'm after, I recently bought a Lynx modified XJS and it's what they used.

Sorry LBS, didn't want to seem like I having a go. There certainly are some very poor "classics".

Sorry LBS - that does not stack - old cars are classic "period"?

The Model T Ford - the most accessible mundane fit for purpose as "transport" only (car) ever - is that not a classic? All cars become classic - the time period is key however. Ford Cortina's Mk1's are now very sought after - yet were only base transport when new...life moves on....Marina's and Allegro (though not my cuppa) are now classic's.

That's your opinion, doesn't make it fact.

I have an opposite opinion but of course that doesn't make it fact either.

Life would be pretty boring if we all thought the same though smile
