They didn't use 4-valve-per-cylinder heads like the Dolly Sprint, though, did they? What was the issue with those engines (I forget)?
Apologies if I'm wrong, but wasn't the sprint a single overhead cam on one side driving a rocker shaft on the other? As opposed from DOHC?Triumph 2000/2500 2 valve per cyl push-rod eng were known to drop crankshaft thrust bearings back in the day causing massive crankshaft end float and if you was lucky and the car was auto it would stuff the gearbox too if initially undetected the SDI 2000/2300/2600 was absolute st camshaft failures and oil gallery woes I seem to remember

Yes they did, cam and buckets on one set of valves rockers on top to operate the others.
So the SD1 2300/2600 engines were actually 24-valve, at a time when BMW, Mercedes-Benz were still only 12-valve?Sardonicus said:

The gearboxes should be fine - BW35/65 or ZF 4HP22 in the SD1. How on earth can a camshaft fail? They're bloody great lumps of metal! Surely they can't just bend, crack or snap?daveenty said:

Yeah, SOHC 16-valve, not sure exactly how it worked.SDI 2300 and 2600's were 12 valve, And yes they did suffer camshaft failure, They had a 1 way valve fitted in the block on the oil feed to the head (To stop the oil draining back when switched off) This used to fail starving the top end of oil, We just used to remove them!

This lot has been left to rot on a farm near where i live.
Behind the scrap Rolls-Royce Avon's is an old Renault Laguna.
Better view of the Renault and there's some old Hunter cockpit under the tarp
A Meteor cockpit
Oh and a lightning in the field
And behind that is a Vulcan cockpit

Oooof. That would be a hefty and interesting resurrection.
I'd reuse the engine/drivetrain in something interesting and scrap the rest of that abomination, penned by William Towns, the second-worst designer in British automotive history (the worst, of course, being Harris Mann).Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
