Uncovered in a nearby garage recently:
A low-mileage, one-owner 1984 Golf GTi in Mars Red.
It's now in my garage!
That sir is a find! It is a seminal car of the 80's along with the Peugeot 205 GTi and Renault 5 GT Turbo.A low-mileage, one-owner 1984 Golf GTi in Mars Red.
It's now in my garage!
I would seriously consider not putting mileage on it - it will then become just an old mass produced car from the 80's. In current order it is rather special.

I was looking for a later MK2 with PAS etc but once I had seen this car and looked at the history I just had to have it. I most probably wouldn't find another Golf GTI like it that's for sure.
It's great to drive, light on the move and just a bit heavy when you park it. These early MK2 GTis share a lot of parts and styling of the late MK1s which I really like.
It's a really sad tale as the owner passed away prematurely and his mum is clearing his house as he never married, actually living next door to his mum in an adjacent semi. He was a scientist and astronomer, which probably explains the meticulous upkeep and handwritten logs for the car's history, which includes every gallon of fuel put in from 30 miles, including amount purchased, price per gallon/litre and average MPG. He kept every sales document from the original order form, pre-delivery inspection sheet and even the mirror hanger checklist signed by the salesman. Every MoT certificate and tax disc has been carefully kept in a file along with every service and parts invoice.
The car has always been garaged and had fitted seat covers fitted from new so the interior is exceptional, just the driver's seat is dusty from the foam lining of the covers. The back seats are unmarked. The boot looks like it has never had anything in it and the spare wheel and tools are unused. The car has been on SORN for the last 5 years but had been carefully stored.
I intend to use the car regularly but sparingly. It has averaged around 3000 miles a year and I will probably do less than that. After such a long period in storage it does require some minor recommissioning, but my aim is to keep it as original as possible, which is what the previous owner did so carefully. I believe the bumpers have been updated as these early cars had plain bumpers and mine have red inserts which were introduced in mid-85. The exhaust is a later twin pipe system - I didn't realise that the first MK2 GTis had a single exhaust like the MK1.
Having the cam belt and tensioner fitted tomorrow plus a few other small jobs so I can start enjoying the car.
Here are a few more pics.
Wow, that really brings back memories. I had one of the eight original Mk2 press launch cars as a company car once its press duties were done. It was Mars Red and on an 'A' plate with plain bumpers and a single exhaust, as you have mentioned. I'd forgotten how bright the interior stripey bits were.
What a great find...well done. I'm sure you will love it!
