From this, to this:

Amazing what a splash of colour, a tube of Autosol and some E-Bay alloys can achieve in a few short months.

as a nice alternative to all of these comfortable, civilised moderns with glorious paintwork, here's my current (long term) project

Bought as an unidentified and incomplete rolling chassis, most of the work so far has been in designing the GRP bodywork in my single garage, hence the slow progress!

Reminds me of this: http://www.amcarguide.com/hot-rod/wally-troy-1959-...

Also, in Australia there is a fairly modern but rare kit car called the Chilli Rowdster that looks similar.

I was offered one of these Summer 2013 for just £5,000, white with navy roof, left hand drive manual. I love these cars. The drivers seat was shot to bits and the boot floor was properly rotten. But I did take it for a test drive and it drove really nice. These kind of purchases I usually give myself 24 hrs to mull over.

That night I did some looking into the cost in making it mint, not concours but mint and usable for dry weekends and the parts prices really blew me away, it was like £2,000 for a seat frame, several hundred quid for a few bits of trim. I hated the colour scheme so it was either buy and restore to my taste or not buiy at all, so I walked away and always vowed to get hold of one. Dark grey preferably.

I have the R107 and the 64 Stingray but I'm still not positive I did the right thing letting that king of pillarless coupes get away confusedconfusedconfused

YES! I can confirm that classic car parts division at Mercedes have adopted a pricing policy to reflect new market valuations, or, to charge like a wounded rhino, which doesn't help as I'm also doing a nut and bolt resto on this:

Who are you using for the work? Or is it a DIY project?

I have a reliable & trustworthy chap in Leicester (whom I have to prompt to let me pay his bill), Rod Fleetwood of R.S.R Automotive who's an old school engineer for the main build.
For the bodywork and paint, there's R.E.O. Motors who've sprayed all my cars for years now and Classic Car Services for the interior bits. I dabble a little, but know my limitations. It's a good team, prices are fair, or agreed prior to work being done, but for me, it's the trust thing. I can drop a car off with any of them and forget it until they call with a query or to say come collect it. They're also all within half hour of each other, so they'll drop off or pick up when I have to work out of town, I don't think I'd have had the Aston or these two Mercs done if I didn't have this team in place.

Not seen the J2. Spent time with a K3 and I think an L type a while back. I'm no expert. But I like the shape of it. Look forward to seeing more of your project as it develops.

I did start a build thread or tagged on the back of someone elses somewhere and got sidelined by other things, I'll see if I can find it and update it.
