In fact, only the chassis and most of the body panels are from the original, red car. Everything else has been upgraded or refurbed.

Room for two wheels?
The old man has always wanted a Brough Superior. So, in his mid seventies we've finally talked him into taking the plunge! It's a 1938 (so one of the last) Matchless engined SS80. They made 100 Matchless engined SS80s in 1938, of a total of 460 made between 1935 and 1940.
Such a lovely thing. I've always been slightly sceptical about their price, but having seen the thing it just looks luxurious! For those that aren't so into bikes, Brough claimed their bikes to be the "Rolls Royce of Motorcycles" in the 1920s. Rolls Royce got the hump, until they visited the works and looked at the bikes and when they left, they gave their blessing to use that phrase.

srob - Wonderful, and the very best of luck to dad, I'd love a Brough - a mate's uncle had a couple many moons back and I've never forgotten the impact they had. I think you saw the piccy of the Brough combo that I posted recently, the old boy who owned that was still enjoying it and I'd hazard a guess he may have had a few years on your dad.

The '80 model year had a few very subtle changes. Some mechanical (the 200 power output went from 90 something to 109bhp), but you can tell visually as the later car had smaller headrests, a smooth steering wheel boss and smaller door lock plungers...It is a lovely colour, yes Orient red. Or at least, it was Orient red 35 years ago. Now it is sadly 35 year faded Orient red which makes colour matching impossible!

I know about these things as my dad bought a W123 200 back in '81 - it was on the cusp of the change so he and I pored over every brochure, price list and magazine article at the time to inform ourselves of what was what!!

Thanks for that...very interesting! Pretty sure mine has both the bigger head rests, and the smooth steering wheel. I can only assume then that my car is either anomaly, or just somehow a '79 model that slipped through the net. It is definitely a '79...at least lg book confirms it, so I don't know.
