Just bought this XJ-S, yesterday, having been looking for awhile. 1983 V12 with a manual gearbox conversion. My drive home was a 100 mile slog up the A1 in Friday afternoon traffic. The big cat performed admirably. Whilst this isn't the ideal plan with an 'unknown quantity', it worked well as a good way to get to know the car and build confidence in it. A few foibles revealed themselves, but essentially the car performed very well. The clutch felt light in the stop-start traffic, the air con needs sorting (which can be a big job, new wiper blades needed etc.

Lovely, I was never a fan but there growing on me, a manual must be quite rare. < >

Thanks for your interest. I think it is a Getrag 265 (as used in the 3.6 XJS) gearbox. My understanding is that the previous owner carried out the conversion. Simply Performance offer all the parts or a complete 'drive-in, drive-out' conversion. I spoke to them last week and the cost for the whole conversion (parts and labour) is around £5,000.
The original 'pre-HE' version offered a manual gearbox (4 speed) as an option, but only 352 were ever made and sold. When the HE was introduced this was no longer an option. They are getting pretty sought after, now, with very few remaining.

Brought the new Dinky toy home in the pouring rain yesterday, it coped pretty well with everything working as it should. There are some scratches in the paint here and there but I'm pleased that the shell is such a good one considering it's twenty two years old. Time to start chipping away at the shopping list as I'll be replacing most of the exterior shiny bits before getting stuck into 'poshing up' the interior... those awful 'Mayfair' seats will have to go...!
Since the '70s backdate' was already started when the car was in Japan I'll continue down the same route, the white roof looks ok at a glance but isn't that good close up, the plan is to paint it a darker shade of metallic green, black, gunmetal grey or go completely bonkers and have a new vinyl roof fitted in dark green a la Wood & Pickett etc. The interior will follow suit with as much black leather and vinyl as I can cram in.

ooh my favourite combo red and black interior. Quite a rare thing to find a manual. I am sure you will find it everything you expected and some . Any chance of a few more pictures.< >

Great find, I can't say I'm terribly surprised at the air con not working, as I can't see the compressor in your photos and some of the pipework appears to have gone missing, along with the cruise control bellows appear to have gone missing. < >

Drove a manual one once, completely changed the character of the car, great fun.

It was as rotten as a pear and worthless at the time.

Giving the poor old thing some unaccustomed exercise. Quite unusual handling with weight at the back and none at the front. Must be like a Porsche 911!
That looks better now than ever.
