Cheers smile

Heres another I took today on the way back home from the Lake District. 600 miles this weekend and the car has been great. Averaged 33mpg on the way back to!

That's lovely

I'm mulling over whether to part with my 69 XJ6 and replace it with something more modern - an XJS or a Mercedes SEC fits the bill (thought about another early 928 but need 4 proper seat belts)

Can I ask what made you choose the XJS?

can't believe you used the "M" word.
Get yourself into a nice XJS if you like your XJ6 you will love the XJS they just seem to have something special about them. The later 4.0l are fantastic motors and can be used daily but if its just for fun try and get the 6.0l you will find yourself sitting on the drive just listening to the engine.

Sorry but the facelift cars don't do it for me at all - and the V12 just seems there is too much to go wrong - and it's a Jag so it will go wrong...I know!

Which is why I would happily consider a Mercedes - I've had a 250ce and a 280slc and they were both extremely well built and reliable - the only downside being rust and perhaps not much in the way of driver engagement

The 928 on the other hand is bullet proof, brilliant to drive and galvanised. And has crap rear seats...

Definitely. Can you not fit a single-line plate on the front (I managed it with a seven-character plate, albeit fractionally smaller than the motorbike font)?
Not legally unfortunately. Need a couple of 1s in the plate for that.

Definitely Japan. Mine took a good few months to find and I bought it at auction. There are very few original/nearly original cars in the UK and they are very susceptible to rust unless treated properly.

I have had the 3.6,4.0,5.3 and the 6.0l all been perfect the engines never seem an issue.
I do like the old SL's and I have been tempted a couple of times by the 928 and I am sure I will at some point own one.
Let us know what you end up with.

Everyone should experience a 928 at some point in their life. I understand there's one going spare in South America...

I wanted something interesting that I could use everyday. Went and saw an SEC but it just didn't have the appeal of the XJS. I went to see quite a few before getting this one though, but it is genuinely rust free.

It is a manual 3.6, and I can confirm it is not far off the V12 speed wise (I have a friend with a 5.3), but it doesn't have the same laid back attitude; stick your foot down and it really revs!

Also a big benefit of the manual is I am genuinely averaging 28mpg in my day to day driving, and on the way back from the lake district got 33mpg on the big motorway run. Great for a car of this type and really makes for a great daily classic smile

the 3.6 was hugely underrated and especially with a manual gearbox. The early Cabriolets had quite a few 3.6 engines

Thanks both - I think an XJS will definitely grace my life sooner rather than later, and I quite like the idea of the 3.6 especially for tootling around London.

I almost bought a mint 60K silver 1980 Pre-HE ten years ago - but passed and bought a 280SLC instead. It remained unsold and I told a friend who stole it for £1500 a year later and left it on my drive - he had second thoughts and offered it to me but by then I had the XJ6, a 280SLC, my ex's Saab 900 and a Gamma Coupe and some very unamused neighbours so I passed again. He hit a kerb and wrote if off 6 months later....
