You're both nuts. I have to drive a 100km round trip every day in either an Alfa 105 or a 64 Mercedes fintail. Usually one is off the road (Finnie is in getting the head reco'd and awaiting parts from Germany) so the Alfa has stepped up to the plate. Holy mother of god. In the last week I have had the starter fall out (That was fun), the handbrake cable fall off, near new clutch is now noisy, speedo now doesn't work, it overheated on a 38 degree day so had to pull over in the shade to calm it down.

This isn't the part where I say I wouldn't have it any other way. I would swap any of my lot for a hyundai today. fking hell.

Getting ready for the Revival....

The Ford Pilot was popular in Scotland when I was a young un. The reg number on yours suggests that it was from Scotland maybe Dumbarton ?

A
Very good observation. smile
The car was bought and lived in the Swanley area on a farm from new but was initially purchased by a Scottish chap. This leads me to believe that the order might have been placed in Scotland but the delivery was to Swanley in Kent.
On my way home from the Goodwood Revival 2009 the following little story happened....

This is Olly & his mum Jean. About an hour before this was taken i stopped about 300yds back in the distance for some fuel. After jumping back in the car i only made it to here before Her Majesty decided that she'd rest when she wanted to and not when i said so. I'd been here for about an hour and up pulls the Renault Megane. Out steps Jean & Olly. My first thoughts are that another random person just wants to have a look at this old car so, i greet them with a hello and Jean returns with...
"I know that car". I immediately think that they've probably seen something similar or know somebody that knows somebody that had one. Etc etc. So i reply with... "oh right, really?"
Jean turns to me and says "yes, my dad bought that car brand new back in 1951"

And the conversation went on from there. I knew the rough history of the car, that it lived in the Swanley area originally and the story's matched up perfectly ! We've exchange e-mail addresses and Jean & Olly are now looking through some of the family history for me for any info they have on the car.

Sadly, despite a couple of e-mails from myself to the address given, I've had no reply. It was however, a wonderful chance encounter and the look on Jeans face will stay with me forever as she was so happy to see the car again after all those years.

Knowing that beetles aren't that popular on here, I'm probably opening a can of worms.

However this is my 1967 US beetle. Imported as a rather tired stocker, this gave me a solid start to my dream Cal Look project. Needing new floor pans, wings, with some minor rust areas on the body sorted, this compared to a UK car was an easy project.

The car was finished (though are they ever really finished wink ) this summer, there are a few niggles to sort out and parts for a larger engine are being collected. This will take it from 1915cc to 2276cc and about 165bhp.

People may not 'get them' but there's no disputing you're doing an ace job there. Just - for some people - on the wrong car. But there's plenty of people who will love it.

I love beetles. Had loads. Lovely car but ruined by stupid nerf bars. Ie no bumpers. And the valance looks wrong with cut outs but then a custom exhaust on.

However still lovely.

No worries John plenty of car genres I don't get, can't like them all smile

Thanks Bob

AustinSmirk No the T bars don't ruin it, they help make it. The '67 Towel Rail bumpers hide the long bonnet and the lines it provides. Jim Rattos car being a classic case in point, a lovely car with a lot of history, but Hector Bonillas and Sarges cars have a lot cleaner lines with use of T bars. Which when you look at the Cal look ethos of removal of extra weight for drag racing T bars fall perfectly into this idea. Mind you I've probably ruined that by having a full leather interior, keeping all the trim and not having one piece windows. smile I've tried to keep the car as faithful as possible to the DKP (Der Kleiner Panzer) Cal look ethos, it's a look that's nearly 50 years old, and still going strong.

My new acquisition... Sadly in an airchamber until the spring - but lots of chrome to remove and polish merrily over the Christmas break!
