Yep, I tend to agree. I wasn't trying to promote this particular item, just the general type of display ramp which can be disassembled and stored in your garage. Together with a shallow pit, I reckon one of these could be very useful.

The big advantage to the Clarke lift is that it is almost completely flat when not in use.

You just park your car over it and you would never know it was there.

It is also easy and quick to lift the car.

Ramps are a pain in the arse. You really need a second person to help you get the car safely on them and they take up too much space when they aren't in use.

Similarly, two post lifts are always in the way if you want to get your car in and out of the garage every day, as you can struggle to open your car doors.

I now have an oversized double garage that I use as a workshop and my daily snotter lives outside. For the extra three or four hundred quid, I would rather have a two post lift, but front drive or mid engined cars, the Clarke lift is fine.

It would appear that the actual scissor lifts are widely the same throughout the range of sellers, I choose Garage Equipment Online for their customer service levels, you can view their range of mobile scissor lifts herehttps://www.garageequipmentonline.com/products/scissor-lifts/

Saw this one being demo'd at Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble last month - only weighs 43kg, so very man portable.

Needs access to an electric supply though, via mains or a gennie. Looked good though.

I had one of these in my workshop for a good number of years. The company are excellent, and the product good. Lifted loads of things with it, and it was very good. Lifts about 1.2m, so fine for oil changes, clutches are OK ish, and all is well. Dropped out a few engines with it no worries.

A couple of points though.

A mobile lift will very quickly wear the floor. Put down some steel strips and run the wheels on the steel. And it will wander about, so a few lugs on the steel helps a lot.
A mobile lift requires far less floor strength - a 2 post lift is expensive to lay the concrete for and dangerous if you don't.
A 2 post lift won't allow you to open the doors. A major PITA if you are working under the dash or tracing wiring etc.
A 2 post lift will always have the 2 posts in the way, even when you're not using it.
If you're using a mobile lift, get a small stool with wheels. You can run it around underneath, and all your tools will fit in the tray. Much easier than trying to reach the floor from standing.
You can't use a gearbox jack on a mobile lift.
A mobile lift will struggle to lift a 1600kg car over the first foot, due to the mechanical disadvantage. A 2 post is much better from that perspective.

Honestly I regret selling mine, even though I had nowhere to put it.

Must these lifts be locked-off at maximum height, or can you just lift say 2' off the deck?

The one I had could be locked in 7 positions from 0 to 1.2m

The price seems very reasonable and have been thinking of buying one.

Go for the one recommended in the post above - you get a vertical lift on this one, which is good if you are dropping the car back onto an engine for example, or onto a gearbox after a clutch change

Which one? The one literally just above your post?

Edited to add: You mean the one in your previous post don't you – I see what you mean re vertical lift as opposed to swinging the car up through an arc (which would annoy me greatly).

Yes, this one. (Ouch did that come out right) - but yes the one in my 1st post. No association with the company other than using their lift every day for 3 years or more. Really good bit of kit for the money, and a few clever design features in it (for example the arms will slide up and down the length of the lift so you can lift bigger and smaller cars.

I have a portable 2 post lift. So far its great. I think these are available in the UK. It cost me about 1400GBP ($1,800 US). Here it is set up in my garage (in the US) with my Scimitar on it. It screws into anchors you drill into the concrete floor. When its not in use you wheel it into the corner. Google the website for MaxJax.
