The tooling costs using low melt tooling were quite modest.I still have some of the tooling which is remarkably heavy.I forget the name of the metal [it ends in ITE !]All of the Facel glass was bespoke for facel and not bought in [sadly today !] Developement of the Facel II started with changes to the wheelarches of the HK500.The prototype facel II has a delightful 2+2 body like a Facellia FHC.One of my very favorite Facels.Photos exist of the HK 500 with SS trims on the reshaped wheelarches.I don't know how to post photos but maybe my friend Wilde can put up photos of the first Facel II which was owned for some years by a friend Jean Francois Pineau.
Thanks for that - fascinating. d.wilde said:
This is the Facel II prototype. The first image is a factory shoot when it was black as all Daninos' personal cars.
Then, in the early eighties when it was owned by JF.
Very nice looking car, also one of my favorite. As far as I know, the car is still in France but it didn't appear for years.
Fantastic car which I had the pleasure of a drive in many years ago.It has an HK500 chassis and the sheet metal is really just modified HK.My own Facel II HKII A101 was also largely hand modified with more lead than I have ever seen in a car.I have just noticed that the prototype has an HK500 fuel tank in the boot, with an internal filler, unlike the production cars external version. Then, in the early eighties when it was owned by JF.
Very nice looking car, also one of my favorite. As far as I know, the car is still in France but it didn't appear for years.

The more I think about it,it is really sad that this car is not restored and seen out with its sisters.Really a most significant survivor of the Facel Marque. My proto Facel II was also built on an HK 500 chassis. When I got mine, the chassis was very distorted after an accident on a London bridge. When I restored it I changed the chassis for the motor show bare chassis which I got with the factory spares.Ironically it was an identical HK 500 chassis, which had been updated with Facel II details for display at the motor shows. Both chassis therefore would have been exhibited together at the Paris show in 1961.It would be 23 years before they would come together again to become one car. Then, in the early eighties when it was owned by JF.

According to the schedule of Facels imported to the UK posted by d.wilde on April 11th., the Charlie Drake Facel 2 (Chassis A 158) is now blue and registered in France. Does anyone know if it is still there and where it is currently? I have really enjoyed following this thread and it made me wonder about the subsequent history of the car - maybe it still has the raised seating position!

The second one was not a manual 6.7L in maroon color. It was HK2B154, a Iridescent Facel Blue car with grey leather, disk wheels and automatic gearbox. It was for sale in USA few years ago and now in restoration in Europe.
What an excellent thread Does anyone know what the regn. no. of the car above is - that plate looks to be UK-style font etc, but I can't make out the final number/letter, CCO 222?. I initially thought it was CCO 222B (as that is an issued series), but not sure. However, I'm assuming that the photo was taken in the USA, or was it taken in Europe as part of the restoration??

When I restored this car,the company polishing the stainless steel went bankrupt and threw away all the stainless steel trims.Almost all of the roof trims had to be remade to fit the car.Connollys had a flood and all the leather trim ended up in a skip ! Fortunately we got everything back together and off it went to japan. It did not fetch £240.000 then....[and it is not worth £240.000 now either]Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
