Id favour using somthing hard and not attatched to your body, i.e piece of wood, chair etc as hitting someone with your fist is bloody painfull. walking back from town in my student days we got jumped on my some townie chav's in the resultant brawl i broke 2 fingers and a jaw.. fortunetly the jaw was the chavs and the fingers were mine.. but it fecking hurt for weeks... and im in no hurry to do it again...

To punch somebody, clentch fist, pull back, throw forward and make contact hehe.
Really you just need to know the dynamics of punching and to use a certain punch for each situation. For example, to knock someone out you will need to rotate their head for the best result. Any punch along the jawline will do, it just needs to rotate the head. Punching directly onto the front of the face means hitting some very thick bone and having experienced broken fingers/knuckles i'd advise not to do this.
If you want to defend yourself it is better not to punch, having distance between yourself and the other person is paramount. You don't want to allow them to get a few punches off so best thing to do is kick (nutsac!) and run (cowerdly, but effective).

Is it actually true that punching upwards onto the nose can really break the nose, piercing the brain thus resulting in death?

I'd hate to be in a position of self defence going for a jaw and ending up in court charged with man slaughter!!!

If you use a palm strike (ie hit with the heel of your palm) at a slight upwards angle you can push the cartilage of the nose into the brain with possible death. You'd be unlucky (or lucky) to do it accidently. A knife hand or similar strike to the throat will also take someone down with possible death.

Other good places to hit include the solar plexus (use a punch with the middle knuckle slightyly extended for extra ouch), groin area (best to use feet for this, contrary to popular belief its also effective on women), underneath and to the side of the chin, kidneys if you get the chance, and nose as mentioned above.

AVOID using a full power fist punch to the head, or any other hard body part, this will do a lot of damage to your hand so should be avoided. Also be careful of punching near the mouth as if you hit the teeth it can cut your hand up badly and the mouth is full of germs so infection is likely.

The technique is to keep your thumb outside the fist, pulled back a bit out of the way. If your right handed keep your left foot and hand forward, probably best to fake an attack with the weak hand on the body or head and when your opponent is going to block that counter with the real punch to either the body or head, whichever is left vunerable. To get the full force of the punch you need to use your hips to swing, it is very important to use your hips otherwise the punch will not carry the full force.

Legally speaking punching is bad, open fist is better and knowing some blocks, locks and throws would probably be far more effective. The best weapon is your brain but unless you practice and refine your techniques to become instinct then they won't be as useful as they can be.

Personally speaking, taking somone out with a good hit feels great, being taken out by a good hit not so great. Despite all that I still usually end up talking my way out of most sticky situations though it's nice to know you can defend yourself if need be.

Its very difficult to explain on an internet forum though, get yourself some proper training.

If you want to knock them down, go for the side of the head...it sends one side of the brain crashing into the other. If you just want to knock them about, go for the front of the head hard and fast. If you breathe out and make some noise while you're doing it, your punch will be much harder.

It might also be a good time at this point to ask the best way to take a punch?

Cheers for the info.

Try and get them square on the nose. A bit of a "softer" landing for your hand. Probably wont break their nose but will produce lots of pain and copious bleeding. That should at least stun them enough to give you time to plan for plan "B" i.e. whatever you think of next (punch in guts/chair leg/leg it etc.)

Taking a hit. Obviously try not to but if you have to try and roll with the punch (like catching a cricket ball) to take some of the momentum out of it. If you can see it coming try and spread your stance as not to get knocked on your arse as you are pretty useless lying on the ground.

Jab with the knuckels to the throad, just below the adams apple. This followed a kick to the knee in any direction, as long as its the wrong way.

Just dislocate their knee and stop them from breathing for a few moments, this usually gives them time to take another look at the situation.

Rule 1. Never put your thumb inside your fist!
Rule 2. Try and avoid the situation if possible.
Rule 3. Punching is actually quite risky. A slap is safer or a poke to throat/eyes.

In all seriousness if you are in danger a jab to throat followed by slap to ear and kick to shin can be a life saver.
all create high pain for relatively little effort, and allow you to run away.

If trying to reason with someone showing them the palms of your hands. In the scary event someone may have a blade, show them your palms and you have exposed your arteries.

One useful thing I have learned is if you are passing/being passed by or standing near to someone dodgy and you are suspicious is to scratch my nose or eye brow. It provides a protective barrier and is in no way aggresive if it is a false alarm.

be drunk or on drugs

otherwise try to avoid it, or flow with it as much as possible, like bruce lee said, 'be water my friend'

If you are going to take some hits protect your head at all costs, clench your fists and put them above each eyebrow and crouch down so the elbows go to the chest, dont worry about your bollox, if the adrenaline is going you probably wont feel much until after its over.

why all the questions though, someone out to getcha?

RE: Jabbing to the adams apple .....DO NOT DO THIS
...this can collapse it...and unless someone is on hand to perform an emergency trachotemy (or whatever its called) can cause death through choking within minutes..it collapses the wind pipe....

this is likely to put in in court facing charges of manslaugher..

.far safer is powerful punch to jaw or upper lip/just under nose....
...or take knee out but you need to know what you're doing with this..(ie understand kicks and placing them)..

Get some self defense lessons..

Probably best to avoid the whole thing in the first place. One of the main problems been a knock punch could result in bang which kills some one and its 7 years inside for manslaughter.

Not that I would recommend this, but some years ago when I used to be somewhat fitter and participated in a number of martial arts, we were shown a range of moves designed to incapacitate your opponent as quickly as possible.

I have never had to try these fortunately.

If you need to stop an attacker with a punch, a swing to the jaw is not very effective.

The most effective way to do it is to punch to the throat. This is of course not only very effective, but also potentially very dangerous.

The second most effective is to strike them on the nose with the heel of your open hand. This will break their nose in a particularly thorough manner.

If you are in a life or death situation, and grappling with your opponent, the most effective way to hasten your escape is to gouge the eyes, or, if you know what you are doing, a strangle hold that will cut the oxygen and blood flow to the brain should suffice.

Of course, as everyone knows, a hard kick to the knackers can be very effective also.

None of the above are recommended.
