Do some boxing/kickboxing if you want to learn to punch properly. Most martial arts teach girly little slaps, which is why Bruce Lee adopted boxing punches into JKD.

A powerful punch is driven from the ground up using your legs and torso to drive it in hard. Just do some training, you won't get it from reading some of the extremely dubious responses here. Without practise you'll never pull any of it off anyway - thats why these ridiculous 1 day self defense courses normally for women are so laughable. I guess they boost confidence though, which might at least avoid a situation.

oh and when punching aim to make contact with your knuckles furthest from your thumb.

No! No! No! Always punch with the knuckles of your index and middle finger.

It might also be a good time at this point to ask the best way to take a punch?

Cheers for the info.

When being punched in the stomach, tense your muscles really tight and breathe out. We do this as practice. Always makes me laugh though.

My advice would be to get some proper boxing lessons if you want to learn how to punch properly. I would like to add - never punch someone in the Adam's apple as you may very well kill them. Personally I would never punch anyone on the jaw because it would bloody well hurt and being a laydee, I'd probably break my hand. A punch on the nose though is pretty effective at stunning. I once received a side kick with much force behind it - from one of the lads I trained with - to my nose. Miraculously it never broke. I was too shocked I think to feel pain.

Best policy is a swift kick in the bollox then run like mad. That's what my friend did and she has a black belt in Tae Kwon-Do and does kickboxing. She was attacked my two people, so sorted the guy out then ran like crazy.

Better still, avoid getting into a situation in the first place. Read people's body language and eyes and maintain an air of confidence and eye contact. That really helps to deter potential attackers.

In my experience, most self-defence classes are a complete waste of time, especially for women as, if you've ever fought a bloke, you would know that you stood a very poor chance.

Read Cold Snap by Thom Jones.
No seriously.

For those that know me, I'm a bit on the slight side, but quite fit. I have put someone on their back with one punch before, he was a good bit bigger than me.
You have to do it like you mean it; no fannying around. And go for the jaw, eye or nose. If they're in a respectable job they'll think twice about acting like an arsehole again when they turn up for work with a face like a pudding.
If you're angry enough you'll do it right.
Ironically, the only time someones landed a good one on me it only broke a cheekbone. And he was the spitting image of 'Big Ron' from Eastenders.

That reminds me of what my dad said to me when I started doing Tae Kwon-Do. He said, "What do you want to do that for? I only ever hit a man once and once was enough." My dad was about 7 stone at 17 and was 9 stone until the age of about 65. He was and still is incredibly fit and strong.

I have been punched once, right on my nose. With 7 blokes to contend with I thought better of it. Didn't even pause my drinking though.

Generally I can talk my way out of anything. The only times I've needed to do anything I've been big enough to just push them away to an extent where they know not to mess. Unless of course they are big men picking on my 5'3 female friends, but that's a story in itself. Punching people scares me after knocking a couple of people out punching their arm

Best way is to slow down the inertia of the punch, i.e. go with the direction of the punch. However doing this in a fight takes many years of experience (and luck) and being able to read body language. Normally people tend to lead with their weak side, so the more powerful side is usually off the rear foot (right foot forward means leftie and vice-versa). If you get a cheeky bar-steward like me who's ambidextrous (sp) a swift kick to the knackers as they tend to be flat in stance which exposes the weaker areas.

When punching just punch straight forward but imagine punching the person 3-4" behind where you are actually gonna hit

This is THE most important thing about a physical blow. PLUS if you are actually going to indulge in violence, the main thing is to impact maximum damage straight off - it's NOT a sport under such circumstances - use whatever is to hand.

I'm a very peaceable bloke, but if there is no alternative will do whatever it it takes (including talking my out or trying to run - the latter not easy at my age). Also try always to be in the position where the other person has "started it" - a shove is physical assault - so that maximum retaliation is justified.

Second pracise a martial art and learn to defend yourself also think twice about punching someone in the mouth as most mugger types are usually after drug money and could be hiv carriers we were taught to go for body or side of the head shots, better still to kick a leg out and run, at the end of the day you do not know how much the other person might know.

Ummm.... I've had too much to drink to read all thats gone on so far....

How do you punch someone properly? Hard. Then kick them. Then run away.

As I've never thrown a punch in anger in my life I might add that this is unproven theory and may not stand up in clinical trials.

results may vary

I must admit i've been having a giggle at this thread....in my line of work i've seen and taken part in many many fights. I've seen gut-wrenching injuries and more blood than i care to remember. It is funny listening to advice from people who have clearly never been in a fight, talking about how and where to punch and how this move will knock an opponent out etc......absolute bollox. Just because someone does Karate (which i did for 8 years), boxing, whatever, it means nothing in a street confrontation. I've always found that the real hard people have never done any sort of training in their lives. They are hard because they are hard, not because they've hit some pads in a sports hall somewhere before sipping their Evian and going home to a microwave dinner....

The best advice on punching and fighting? Avoid any situation where you will have to do either!!
