Hey Reg,

Expect you drive an Austin still...

I must dig out that email where you gave me your word that you'd not create yet another profile on PH (this must be your 30th now?)

You're obviously not a man of your word. How sad.

Maestro effy

I reckon the best top mid sized hot hatches of the eighties were

1. Fiat Strada 130TC Abarth
2. MG Maestro 2.0 Efi
3. Peugeot 309 GTi

XR3's and Golf GTi's rank well down the list.

don't you mean the best hot hatches of all time? because as we both know, everything good happened in the late eighties!

for the record, my top three left-field choices for the 80's/90's crossover period would be:

metro GTi

fiat punto turbo

corsa GSi

That advert is just awesome!

Two of Noel's lines really stick out for me though:

"It looks really terrific on the road" (About the fat-arsed souped up granny wagon that was the MG Maestro)

and

"I think it's the most stylish estate car ever made" (Quite incredibly about the Montego Estate, posible the least stylish
estate car ever made)

Both lines uttered with such stunning traemark Edmonds sincerity you have to wonder how any of the production crew kept a straight face.

I had one of those (limited edition run of 500 odd), ended up owning it due to a deal my mum was doing with a local garage dealer over a plot of land, the dealer was a few grand under the asking price and the M Turbo was the fastest thing on his lot and mum was happy to do a deal on that basis and I was the proud new owner of a Maestro Turbo. Very fast (for the time) with 150 bhp and a turbo with a lag to 3500 revs, used to take off like a rocket. Surprised many a traffic light grand prix competitor (all I would see in my rear view mirro was the shcoked O of a mouth expression from the other chap). Didn't go round corners and despite upgraded mintex pads and brakes didn't stop!

I think the mk2 cavalier Sri 130 would stand the test of time better than the first 2 .
