The other evening, a friend of mine and I had one of those 'down the pub, had a few drinks, start random pointless debate' as to what the best intro to a song in the world is.

We said it had to be a song that you hear and either grin like a drunken idiot or shout out 'OMG', crank the volume up on the stereo and dance like a drunken idiot!!

We ended the evening (after several top choices, and many stupid ones) with two songs each:

1) Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
2) Nirvana - Come As You Are
3) Rolling Stones - Can't Get No Satifaction (Or 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking', couldn't decide!) or
4) (Think this is the winner!) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

If you think you can settle this for us, or think you can do better, please feel free to post.

Thanks in advance

that's not an intro, that's an instrumental followed by a song.

That would be my choice too without doubt Mark. I didn't like to say though in case people thought I was obsessive.

'voodoo child' by Jimi Hendrix. The intro just tells you, you are about to hear a master at work.
