Stand By Me - Oasis.

Seriously, even if you dislike Oasis, try this one on volume 10 and listen to the start of this song.

Belter.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love...

Would suggesting Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, or Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds be cheating?

'voodoo child' by Jimi Hendrix. The intro just tells you, you are about to hear a master at work.

Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill
Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd - It's My Life
Alan Parsons Project - Sirius (technically a track in its own right, but in practical terms it's an intro to Eye in the Sky)

That would be my choice too without doubt Mark. I didn't like to say though in case people thought I was obsessive.
Nothing wrong with that mate! Still doing the rounds on that TV ad. Here`s another intro- "One perfect sunrise" by Orbital.

I prefer Woman From Tokyo myself... great intro with guitar, organ, then added hi-hat, bass drum, finally bass guitar, and then all-in... (actually quite similar to Smoke on The Water in that respect).

Led Zep, Rock'n'Roll, best cymbal intro to any song.

And agree with Won't Get Fooled Again. (Only saw the Who live twice this summer )

Last ones...

The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

But, have to admit, not sure anything can beat the Metallica nominations or Jimmi Hendrix...

Some good stuff there.

Hendrix and Deep Purple definitely get my vote.

One obscure one: Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry - cool/weird spoken intro by Gibby Haynes from the Butthole Surfers:
"Soon I discovered this rock thing was true. Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil. Jesus was an architect, previous to his career as a prophet. All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world, so there was only one thing that I could do: was ding-a-ding-dang my dang-a-long-ling-long."

...then launching straight into a maximum attack thrash-industrial mess. One of those intros that first time around you want to rewind and listen to it again, sod the song.

I can't go without saying...Queen!

I Want to Break Free, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, in fact, most all of their intros...
