Hmmmm...
this got me wondering in a "philisophical" sense to ponder a burning question....

If I bought a teddy for a tenner, named it Mohammed then sold it for £20.

Have I made a prophet?

bandit
(sorry if someone has already had the same ponder)

I remember enough people at Uni who became hard core left wing but since growing up I seem them wandering around the City in stripes.

No and he took the job and wages of an Englishman who would have saved him!
Wrong, medical professionals come here because there is a shortage, not to displace existing health professionals.
I don't doubt that, but aren't there plenty of sick people in these third world countries a lot of them come from? It's always struck me that British doctors tend to come from the sort of background that would have allowed them to earn every bit as much being a barrister or whatever, yet they choose to go into medicine because they want to help people and usually end up fairly close to home. There are easier ways for an affluent middle class Brit to become minted, but they do it out of a genuine desire to help. Now contrast this to doctors from lesser developed countries - they have people in need all over the place, but do they stay to make their patients lives better? No, they emigrate to places like the UK for the purpose of money.

I can't deny I'd do the same, but I'm in the business of making money rather than caring for people. Surely in healthcare your patients should be the first priority and making money should be a resounding second.
Chris has a good point here. While there may be a shortage of doctors here the DoH and NHS are colluding to introduce more of a market economy. They're thinning down the number of posts and thereby being able to put the squeeze on doctors and reducing their pay (whether or not you think that's a good or bad thing is another debate entirely). MTAS was a recent example of this and so far about 8000 have lost their jobs or moved overseas.
Personally I joined medicine with honourable intentions but being in the NHS for 5 years was a pretty torrid experience. I recently left and now work in the Pharma industry. My basic salary has increased by 25% and with all the extras my total income has gone up by 75%. The working environment is infinitely better and the company I work for actively nurtures and looks after its employees; as a result the productivity here is significantly higher than in the NHS. Here is all about the carrot, the NHS is all about the stick. The NHS is in the shit, I wonder why??

Sorry for the thread hi-jack by the way!
