Anyone know how much this pays ?( I am looking for some spare cash when I retire)
Not much and you dont get expenses, the logistics controller will try to give in/outs on long jobs but hitching is almost always involved.

Yep, it's all about standing on M'way sliproads with a trade-plate in your hand, thumbing your way back to where you came from. Or "near" to where you came from.

All-in-all, a hard way to make a living. Unless you've got a dog to sell.

No idea how much it pays, but when my father gets a new company car it's always delivered to the door by a retired guy. The UK branch of the company buys thousands of cars from the same dealer, and they have quite a few retired people delivering cars. He had a train ticket back home, all he needed was a lift to the station.

No, this is just the observation of a long-term m'way user.

As far as i understand most of the drivers are getting home for less than the travel allowance, after all if you don't use a taxi or catch the train the money is yours

I picked up one of these "trade platers" from an auction not long ago, took him right to where he was going, he was most grateful. Apparently they get a few quid for the first 40 miles and 18p per mile thereafter. So they need to do several hundred miles in a day to make any sort of money - and then hitch a lift back home.

You might want to look at same-day courier work. Get in with a busy firm and you'll go all over the country, and you can pull over a grand a week minus costs some weeks.

I did a bit of this last year.

Basically 2 schemes, one where you earn reasonably, but have to fund your own returns, and one which pays less, but trains etc are expensed on top.

Can be a ballbreaker though, Midlands to aberdeen and back in a day (driving both ways) is fairly common.

£2400 after tax is a lot better than I would have expected. Not a life I'd choose though.

Take ou Parking fines ,speeding fines, insurance, servicing tyres etc & the Public Liabilty Insurance, Goods In Transit Insurance & Another liabilty Insurance for journey cover ie:

If you undertake the job & your van is unable to deliver the goods/package for any reason at all ( breakdown/accident etc) then the courier company are within their rights to have the item recovered from your van & then forwared on at your expense , if you are more than half way to your destination they will hire a local Courier company to complete the journey on time and you have to pay!

Been there never again!

Worked as a valeter from the age of 13. Went to uni and trawled all the dealerships in the area asking for a job. Gordons Ford of Bolton were the only ones who would employ me, I was 19 at the time. I delivered new company cars and vans, collected old ones and delivered and collected hire cars and vans. I also collected unregistered cars from compounds around the country. Fantastic job.

If you're driving a 747 or the Shuttle I guess you'd be earning enough to be comfortable..
Civilian astronauts earn up to $100,701 p/a so about £50K. Those in the military stay on military pay scale.

As a comparisson, a BA Captain earns between £70K - £100K
But a BA Pilot doesn't get to go into space...
