In fact, any of the landies in your profile coupled with a kinetic recovery rope would move that rock too!

But I'd stick with the digger option.

To avoid this...I'm sure Mrs 88 would react differently than she did to her new ponds;)

@ Zeek biglaugh

Well, although I'm not busy digging, I have been doing some more research...

Here is another old photo (together with the first one again). The new one was taken after the war. You can see that the big warehouse structure that was shown to the south end of the property almost in the centre of the wartime photo, is not there after the war (it was in that area that I did some test holes and found the trough etc). I guess that must have been some kind of storage facility?

(during war)

(after war)

There is clearly still a path to entrance of the tunnel, and the rockface appears intact. I've also found a better copy of a very recent ariel photo which I will scan in later for comparison.

Didn't Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan have a method of destroying rocks which involved pouring spirits over it and then setting fire to it? The rock would crumble under the intense heat, or did I completely make this up?
Heating rock to destroy them is probably a bad idea. Some rocks put in fires explode. I should know.....(fortunately I ducked and it went down the back of my collar and out the back of my coat.) Others will crumble but this doesn't look like the ones that crumbeled.
I thought there was a way of destroying rock (if dry) by drilling and inserting wooden dowls into it - you then soak the rock causing the wood to expand which cracks the rock - don't know where I've dragged that from or even if it is true!!!

Absofugginglutely great thread BTW CY88 - well and truly bookmarked. PH gold.

Mmmm, tricone mill tooth rock bit. Wonder if it has sealed bearings...

Anyway, you don't want a milled tooth bit for boulders, far to soft. Noooo, if you're going for a tricone you want a tungsten insert bit, or a TSP fixed cutter bit. Or maybe even a diamond impreg on a turbine.

Cheers,

FT.

You ARE Harry Stamper!

I think the boulder needs a thread of it's own.
