I had my sons name put together in kanji for tattooing onto my right shoulder. I did a bit of research to check the kanji came out correct, and then had it confirmed by colleagues (I was working at a Japanese company when I had it done).

But with any of these foreign characters its way too open for abuse by tattooists who don't really give a st.
if its your sons name, and I presume he is English speaking, why not just get it spelt in English. Whacking it down in china town aint giving it no more cred than a dad turning up to pick him up from school in a Vaxhall Nova with 21 inch spinners
Kanji is Chinese script, so:
- unless your sons name is Chinese, there isnt going to be a Chinese word for it
- Checking with someone Japanese would be of little to fk all use seeing as they pronounce the same characters completely different from the Chinese.

To form a western name in Japanese text, katakana would be used.

Debating putting my name in katakana on my upper arm as the actual script and characters in it look good (imo, and thats the opinion that matters seeing as its my arm) and its a nice reminder of my time in Japan. I can also be quite reassured that it is my name being that the Japanese banks and immigration authority arent known for their sense of humour and its their translation of my name I'd be using hehe
Kanji is originally chinese, but its used in the current japanese logographic writing system.

why not? whats wrong with it?
I think its a bit tacky, after all you are unlikely to forget your children's names are you!.
I got it done after getting divorced and moving out of the marital home. Now I only see my son every saturday. Its a little extra something to help me get through the week. It really does get to me that I cannot see him on weekdays, give him a cuddle in the morning, read him a bedtime story every night.

You believe its tacky, but you obviously also live in an ideal world where everything is perfect.

Kanji is Chinese, symbols of which are used in Japanese. Katakana is cut down kanji to phoneticise (real word?...anyone's guess) words in to Japanese.

A Chinese person might put a western name in to Kanji, a Japanese person really wouldnt.

yes A western person might use Kanji on a stamp (Japanese equivalent of a signature) if they happen to be staying in Japan for any length of time, it might have some meaning, it might not.

none of that Japanese stuff for me, instead I chose a smallish TVR logo on the top of my back, felt like a good idea at the time, after a few too many Budweisers in Florida.

It was either that or a teletubby with a AK47, so i think i made the right choice

When I was about 15, I thought that getting a tattoo of the Vampire glyph from Blade would be cool:

I then became older and realised it wasn't at all.

A bit like the tattoo equivalent of wearing a T-shirt which promotes your favourite sci-fi show.

That's the main thing I don't get.

People who get tattoos are usually getting something that they only appreciate currently, without fully understanding it will stay with them FOR LIVE.

So all these people with "fk society" and pictures of 'the finger' are going to look like absolute idiots when they're sucking dinner through straws in the old folks home.

Hmm, bit of a sweeping statement, I've got three, first at 18, second at 21, third at 25. All were designed by me as a reminder of who I was at the time. Still look at my first, 8 years later, and remember my opinions, tastes, etc.

The whole point was to remind me when I'm old and crinkly of how I've changed and (possibly) grown through the years, so I don't turn into an old fecker who thinks anything different to my opinion is rubbish, to remind me that almost everything in life changes, and to attempt to not to get stuck in one mode of thinking.

There are as many reasons for getting a tattoo as there are for any important decision, and just like any important decision, some people think it through over time, some people go with the first or easiest option.

My tattoos also help remind me that everybody's taste is their own, and therefore who am I to judge as long as it has no effect on me?

EFA.

Don't get them at all myself, I can just imagine them all sat round in the nursing home when they're 80 with unreadable saggy blurs.
Yeah, right, I agree. It must be terrible having saggy tattoos at the age of 80. Think of the misery...... rolleyes

So, when you're pissing the bed every night, and sucking food through a straw every day, will you really give a fk about some faded old tattoo?

I was wondering how long before the utterly, utterly predictable "I don't like tattoos myself blah blah...." posts appeared, on a thread about tattoos.

Sure, that's why I covered myself.

Your concept of tattoos is facinating. Late teenagers getting cartoons and slanderous comments isn't!

And PS. Chinese lettering tattoos are tackywink

i knew a tattooist where i grew up and he told me that quite a few local chavs got "thug life" tattoos on their backs/arms

Clearly only someone like Tupac could ever get away with something like that, not some scrawny white-trash from a small town in england

Tattoos do tend to divide people one heck of a lot, definitely a marmite thing. The kanji on my arm reminds me of a difficult time in my life (divorce, not seeing my son as much). The celtic band may seem like a cop out, but it was something my sister and I both decided on when I finally moved away from home.

I've only got a couple of tattoos at the moment, and made sure that neither of those would be visible in the office - I generally work in straight-laced corporate environments, and having a tattoo on display would generally be frowned upon (especially at the Japanese company).

Maybe more in time, who knows. I've got a few ideas on things that I'm interested in, but as with the others I've had done, I'll take my time and think it through.

I've had a few friends have tattoos that they've regretted - one has her husbands initials tattooed on (no-one was surprised when they divorced), another had his wifes name done in sanskrit (or something like that), and that was followed by the inevitable divorce.

So, I can go on a TVR forum and state "I don't actually like TVRs, imagine what they'll look like in 40 years, all rusty and knackered" and it will be taken as a balancing statement will it???

Jeez, if they don't like tattoos what the hell do people even OPEN a tattoo thread for???? Seriously, do you sort of guys come in just to have a dig?

Shall I go to the Kit Car forum and tell them all I don't like kit cars, or the Jag forum and tell them they are rubbish????

confused

The thread wasn't opened to have a dig at tattoos, just one particular muppet - but people can dislike them if they want.

No, I meant 'open' as in why do people CLICK on the thread, not START the thread. biggrin

Major difference being that this is a misc thread in a misc thread forum. going to a TVR specific website to do that would just be trolling.

Someone asked about tattoos, some people say they're cool, some people say they're not; what's the problem? But seeing as this is primarily a car-related forum, let's keep it car themed:
