The problem young Edd will possibly have with doing the decent thing is that he didn't cry Foul! and told his mate at the earliest opportunity, but let it run for a while.
Therefore, how his mate reacts when presented with said evidence - such as MSN logs - is automatically going to prompt the question 'why didn't you tell me sooner?'

Oddly I always find a girl that's begging for it relatively easy to turn down (even if hot) - it's the ones that take some effort that get my attention!
Whatever the truth of how much you fancy her, I'd just let her know clearly that you're not interested, as you value your mate's friendship. This avoids the following risks:
1) She's offended that you've turned her down (as you've given a 'decent' reason).
2) That it was all a wind-up and you look like a tw*t.
3) That your mate finds out.
She's obviously not trustworthy so who's to say how this could pan out if you take her up on her offer, and similarly you need to be careful that she doesn't tell another side to the story. By just replying you've encouraged her, so your mate could feel legitimately betrayed.
Aside from the above, I'd like to think that none of my mates would ever go behind my back - and surely you're not so limited for options that you have to take every opportunity are you?!
