Lovely place I hear, but I've not visited since before
the fire about ten years ago....
You mean "Nockherberg". Great place, especially for the Starkbierfest, which is like the Oktoberfest but a lot smaller – and the bier is stronger.
yes

I go nearly every year and love it smile

Apparently the Nockherberg used to be rough place were the drinkers used to punch and smash the place up a lot. However, when it was rebuilt after the fire which destroyed the whole place, it has somehow been able to clean up its image and is now starting to become a tourist attraction of its own. A great place to drink and get drunk.

Trouble ? In a Bavarian Beer Garden ? Surprising.

I visited it recently. Excellent. It's much bigger than I ever remember it.

They do all the usual Munich beer garden stuff and they do litre
steins of Paulaner Salvator at 8%, which takes some drinking I can tell you.

Given that it's on the east bank of the Isar, it's off the usual tourist route,
which is good. No crowds of drunken Americans.

The other one near there is the Hofbrau Keller on Inner Wiener Str. That's
good, but not as good as the Paulaner brewery tap.

The one on Einstein Str moved some time ago. I haven't visited the new
location yet.

I recently moved to Munich after living a year in Zürich, and I can only confirm that Munich is, by comparison, very cheap. Rents are somewhat high, however, but I find them comparable to Stockholm, where I was before.

I'm living near Olympiapark (BMW Welt is well worth a visit for PHers, if you haven't been already) and my girlfriend lives in Hiadhausen (Prinzregentenplatz is also her closest U-bahn). We both pay around 1200EUR for our flats, which are about 60m2 with two rooms.

I'm well up for a meet sometime, though I am currently car-less (and likely to remain so for some time) and I'm working in Switzerland during the week.

What ho chaps, finally arrived in Commie & Bratwurst land. I presume the Aussie and Irish bars are home to the expat community. Anyone for some beers during the week? Toytown is all a bit too organised and pretentious for my liking, there must be some normal folks about.

Lived in Munich many many moons ago - one or two Toytown lads are alright - can maybe put you in touch with a couple of fellas if you want - PM me. It's not all bad though, and if you're single, well, Toytown drinks was like shooting fish in a barrel...

I'm starting work in South Munich from 21st October, staying in hotel and doing a weekly commute initially. Will need to set-up branch of my ltd co in Germany to pay tax, anyone else do this, got advice?

Any activity here? Would be great to meet up for a pint if anyone fancies it.

P.S. I still don't have a car, but I'll gladly talk about them or go for a ride in one (or three)

I'm spending alternate weeks in Switzerland, so I can relate! How about Friday Feb 7th for a pint? Open to suggestions for locales, but the Irish/English places tend to be full of teenagers singing karaoke on weekends.

Not sure if you're much of a rugby fan but I need to be in town on 8th to catch the England game at 18:00 (which will probably mean going to an English/Irish affair but before the Karaoke kicks off).

Haven't got the foggiest idea about rugby (well, played it at school, but that was a while ago), but I always enjoy sporting events... The atmosphere gets to me! If you can put up with stupid questions then I'll be happy to join.

Let me know what your plans are closer to the time!

Been a little lapse on this thread.

Got to take the Impreza back to Blighty for MoT and a new windscreen - Leaving this Wednesday PM and returning Monday late. If anyone needs some "Blighty" shopping let me know.

Also, going to Red Bull Hangars at Salzburg the following weekend (probably Saturday 15th). Have 3 spare seats if anyone fancies a gander....

Schickimicki is a german slang word for the wannabe celebs, like most b-z listers..... anyone, or the followers of, who has been on Big Brother, Kyle, X-Factor or any other such purile programme.

Not quite correct
The expression is very much related to Munich - not Germany so much.
And a Schicki is anyone who aspires to or lives a shallow designer lifestyle, whether they have big money or want to look like they have big money. The D-Z celb group you mention are prime candidates.

Primarily Munich, which explains why the largest Bayern München fan group is called 'Schickeria.' This explains it: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schickeria
