Surprised nobody has mentioned the Moselle valley. Anywhere between Koblenz and Trier. Some of the best driving roads on the planet either side of the valley (Eifel or Hunsrück), the N-Ring within a stones throw, water-sports, beautiful scenery, cracking wine, quiet/tranquil, fantastic restaurants, relatively cheap, lots of history; Castles such as Burg Eltz, close to Blighty, excellent weather...
I was going to mention it but I thought it might be a bit far from where the conversation started. Absolutely agree with you. I would add you could pick almost any village from Schweich to Koblenz and find a gem of a place to stay with a nice terrace stunning view and wine you could drink from dusk to daybreak. I'm coming over to Trier sometime soon to get my 996 C4S serviced happy to buy you a drink. Mehring is where I normally hang out.

Mehring is a nice quiet spot, I was there a week or so ago buying a little bike for my daughter. I'll see you when you arrivesmile I live in Traben-Trabach just up the river.

As a footnote to this conversation - I have booked up a few days at Richard's home based on this thread. Am looking forward to taking the car (and the other half of course) out in August.

So based on accommodation, petrol, tunnel, food etc I think the OP should be paying half of my holiday costs for inspiring me into booking a euro trip... V8mate - let's start the negotiations at £200 shall we? winkbiggrin

Will pop up a few more photos at some point but for those thinking of spending some time out there I can't recommend Richard's place enough. Lovely location, easy to get to and the historic town is beautiful.

Some decent roads too wink

Gratuitous picture of Richard's house and my lovely blue car:
