My 2011 9-3 ttid aero wagon. Stab n steer like it should and running an AMD remap which took power up to 209bhp and 330lb/ft. Immensely practical whilst comfortably keeping pace with a work colleagues shiny new clio trophy 220!!

It does lots of miles a year (20-25k) and I love it to bits!

Picked this up on Friday for £500 as a replacement for the X type behind it after the jag failed it's MOT on rusty sills.
Apart from having 187,000 on the clock, and plenty of stone chips/scrapes on the front splitter, its in great condition.

Here's mine. It's a 2008 9-3 TTiD Aero Auto. I bought is as an ex-demo at 9 months old and still love it, 7 years on.

Need to sell my 2006 Aero estate manual. 153k miles, but engine rebuilt by an expert at 130k.
Apart from Autotrader, is there anywhere specialist Saab anyone would recommend to advertise it?
Reason for sale is that I have had to take over my daughter's XC90 because it has faults that make it unsaleable.
So Saab is surplus to requirements.

Uksaabs.co.uk but also put in on gumtree, consider PH or Ebay but fees apply.

What happened to the engine?

I bought the car with 120,000 miles on it. Nice black car, clean light grey leather. Seemed fine.
Took it straight to my TVR specialist and had him check the car over - only issue was that it needed new front brakes.
Did a full oil and filter change anyway, so that I knew the oil was good.
Fitted a new set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3s, and away we went.

I then noticed that it was using rather a lot of oil, which settled down to being 1.5 litres per 1,000 miles.
And it didn't seem to pull like my previous 9-5s.
Asked around while doing 2500 miles a month - was told it was most likely the turbo on the way out.
Did the maths and decided oil was cheaper than turbos.

Took the car into a Saab specialist (not near home) for a routine service at 132,000 miles.
He also said "turbo" re the oil usage. I said i will live with it.
£400 for the full service, and on their advice, £200 to drop the sump and clean out all the sludge and clean the sump filter.
Paid the bill, was given the keys, then told they thought I might have a head gasket issue. bds!
So my £200, and the oil and filter change, was a complete waste of money and they knew it.
Looked under the header cap, enough mayonnaise to start a branch of Hellmans.....

Took the car to my TVR specialist, as he is one of only two people I can trust 100% in the motor trade, and anyway is cheaper per hour than the Saab mob.
He thought about it, and said that my oil usage and loss of power was more likely to be piston rings and possibly a valve issue, and that yes, the head gasket was stuffed and they should have seen that when they checked the water as part of the service.
He stripped the engine down, replaced the head gasket, found a sticky valve, so had the head refreshed, valves cleaned and lapped back in, head skimmed, by a racing head specialist he uses for race and track day engines.
He then replaced the piston rings and crankshaft shells, honed the bores to remove 10 years of st, found the timing chain really slack, so replaced the timing chain kit.
Checked the turbo - working perfectly. £560 of parts from Saab Parts Direct, £1300 labour and fresh oil.

Car then used 0.25 litres of oil over the next 18,000 miles, and has just been serviced again, by the TVR guy, with no issues found.
So the car is fine, and I will be MOTing it next week prior to sale.

So our 3 Saabs won't be going to the Saab specialist any time soon.

I'm surprised he looked at you in the eyes whilst charging £600. Surely he's have done at least a basic visual check on all engine parts. Roughly whereabouts in the country is he? So I can avoid.

We don't do name and shame, as it is not fair - it doesn't allow the professional a fair chance to state his side of things.
All I can therefore say is that it was in East Anglia and within 60 miles of London. Hopefully you aren't.

That makes interesting reading. I'm on my 2nd aero estate, and in the 8 months / 10k miles I've owned it have got through 10+ litres of oil.
The turbo has been out and refurbished but that didn't solve the oil usage and smoking. Its just been back to my local saab specialist this week and they have diagnosed piston rings and possible scoring of the crankshaft - so basically similar to your experiences. Similar quote of £1300+VAT to sort so I'm probably going to continue with topping up the oil! Good to know that the work sorted yours though, my guy is concerned that he'll do the work and it won't solve the issue...
