Saab 9-5 wont start Help !
Discussion
Ok managed to fix the problem :
The pressure of the fuel running to the plugs was very low and just dribbling out.
Clamping the return fuel hose from the engine allowed the fuel pressure to build up and now the clamp has been removed the problem has gone away.
Replacing the fuel pump must have caused a loss in fuel pressure but now all is running perfectly.
Strange end to the problem
Thanks for all the advice posted up - Much appreciated :-)

think our posts just crossed - i wonder if the pump not running was a symptom rather than the cause. is the new one definitely priming when you ignition on ? - lift up the rear seat base and you'll clearly hear it when you turn the ignition to on. it'll then go quiet until it gets a signal from the ecu demanding fuel
immobiliser did occur to me but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't even crank if the immobiliser wasn't switching out

Unlikely to be the immobiliser if the car cut out while running. Once the immob has done it's job, and sent the 'go' signal, that's it.immobiliser did occur to me but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't even crank if the immobiliser wasn't switching out

I would personally check to see if it has fuel coming to the engine by disconnecting a pipe. If that's OK, I'd then check for sparks by getting a plug out and checking. If you have sparks the CPS is almost certainly OK.
You can't rely on the rev counter showing RPM to diagnose a CPS, as it will sometimes take it from the cam sensor.
No sparks and no fuel = catastrophic electrical failure - check the ECU powers and grounds. This is about the limit of the checks you can do I would think with no specialist kit or code reader.
No code reader and no specialist kit

Did you resolve this problem... As I have similar..... It started like bad petrol ......coughing and spluttering....then wouldn't start. AA said it was crank sensor .... Changed that still not start... Then changed the ignition coil pack. Problem still exists
Try the fuel pump (located under rear seat) I got a secondhand part and car started fine after that - plus its an easy fit.Gassing Station | Saab | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
