Lotus Exige V6 SC (Exige (S3?) - New Elise SC
Discussion
It's got to be best part of 80k to get it in the UK tho once taxes and duty paid ?

Big fat car - 'BFC' if you like. Somewhat stupid but in a pleasing way. Best version yet. You know you want to shag her at least once. Not all that relevant to Lotus. Front looks too much like the F12. Front splitters are a fortune to replace - at least the ACR versions are of the previous version. Muscle car.

About the same as a spec'ed up evora then? (well, almost!)PiB said:

the s1 exige is a timeless masterpiece ... it will always look good in context. as it does in that shot ...
I think Lotus could release this tomorrow and it'd still look badass (adopt bias mode):chevronb37 said:
The old models don't look out-of-date as such, just different to the current iteration. Wish I could afford one to go with the old shed...

Keep the faith Simpo, you are a man after my own heart.
Whatever you do, don't let Scuffers into your head. He has a brain full of minuses.
The Evora was never supposed to be 'the answer' but it was misguided. They went with market research not their guts. Something I believe they have put right with the Exige V6. I honestly think it's the car they passionately wanted to make, not the car they thought they should make. The reality is that market sector is prejudiced against the Lotus badge. People who don't even like cars dream of owning a porsche one day, that or a ferrari. More people reach the point of affording a porsche and that's why you see more of them around. No-one dreams of owning a Lotus one day (apart from the two of us perhaps!). A porsche is a way of saying 'you've made it'. A Lotus is a way of saying 'car nerd' if you give a stuff what other people think.
Lotus sell what they do on the strength of their cars and in the face of extraordinary odds and ferocious, well funded competition. They only wanted a tiny, tiny slice of the Cayman/911 market. They didn't get it. Given their Elise base migrated mainly to that tedious 911 it made sense to do a Lotus clone. But Lotus was their entry point to sports car ownership. The dream was still to own 'that porsche' one day, not a £60k Lotus. Didn't stop it being utterly brilliant and frankly screw anyone who thinks otherwise. The Evora remains one of the very few cars that is genuinely and almost equally capable on both the road and track. If I had to have one car I struggle to think of another that I would enjoy more. But you have to actively dislike porsches to want one and there ain't many of us about.
Lotus can't do what porsche does, be all things to all men, middle of the road, quite liked by everyone. It's automotive pop music.
Equally Porsche can't do what Lotus does. So what if not many people get that. Porsche would never offer a car as uncompromising as the Elise/Exige. For those few who place driving pleasure above all else, uncompromising is where it's at. What's 'ease of entry' compared to a sub 900kg kerb weight? What's motorway manners compared to supreme agility and scalpel sharp turn-in? Or exquisite unassisted steering? If you want the last word in feel, communcation, response, precision and suspension wizardry, you owe it to yourself to own a Lotus.
In 3000 miles across europe last summer the Boxster S was good everywhere. Much better on the motorway than the Elise, no question. But the Elise was night and day the better car on the roads that we drove all that way for - the alpine passes. Honestly, I was shocked at the difference. On the greatest roads I've ever driven (the one place above all that you want a sports car to deliver for you) the Boxster came up short. No matter how hard I drove it, it never really came alive. Very obedient and competent, a great car in isolation but getting back in the Elise was like going from VHS to Blue Ray. My Dad, who owns the Boxster, turned down every offer to drive my Elise. I only heard months later why. He just dropped £35k on a porsche and was loving the trip. He didn't want a poxy (what £15k?) Lotus ruining it for him.
Don't let anyone tell you there's nothing special about Lotus. There is.

My Exige was due in October, then put back to December, then again "to the New Year". I absolutely am at a loss as to what Lotus are up to. I spoke to a motoring journalist who told me I will absolutely love the Exige "if I ever get it". He says Lotus are still in severe financial difficulties.
I'm 63 years old & this will be my first Lotus (not counting a couple of Lotus Cortinas), perhaps I should have ordered the Radical, made by an extremely professional company.

Heard yesterday, Lotus are actually building Exiges, but are LHD, apparently Lotus want to launch in China & Australia at same time, presumably China is LHD & Australia is RHD, so I'm assuming they will complete batch of LHD, then start RHD, with 1st going to Australia, then UK ???? Does anyone know any different ????

Guys if you want some more info on how good the Exige V6 is, then pick up a copy of this months Evo.
They are doing their "Car of the Year" showdown.

Ps Should be in newsagents soon but us subscribers get it a couple of days before it hits the shops.

Auto Express "Performance Car of the Year" article confirmed my biggest worry about the Exige S, where they say "some suspect build quality and a thirsty engine - with a miniscule fuel tank that forces you to stop and fill up every 100 miles or so ". Just over 100 miles of range makes this an impossible car to live with on both road and track, just can't believe Lotus would design a car with such a massive constraint in it's potential use, it's a bit like a Tesla ?
