Gazing into your crystal balls, what do people expect to happen to VXT values? They currently seem to sit around £10k for an average car, given the performance on offer, are they likely to drop further?

I know the S1 appears to be the safest bet for holding its value, I haven't had anything remotely hard core before and am concerned that I would find the S1 too much like hard work. I also find the performance promised by the VXT very appealing.

What I don't really want to do however is chuck £10k at a VXT for it to be worth £6/7k in 2 years or so.

Seems like 220's bottom out around £6k, I don't see them dropping, and VXT's will always be worth a premium over VX220's.

What do others think, am I talking rubbish?

I personally reckon they'll stick in that general area. Could see them dipping below £9k, but doubt it'd be by much - certainly not anywhere near £6k in the near future.

RE S1s and hard work - bit trickier to get into, roof is a bit more of a faff (but not necessarily any less water proof), they can be every bit as reliable, and I would still recommend trying one.

You may prefer the VXT still - plenty do - but it's a **massive** chunk heavier than an S1, a far softer setup, and it's simply not as responsive. Quicker in a straight line, mind you.

Worth trying an S1 as well though, as at the moment people are struggling to sell them - the Euro market doesn't seem to be quite so strong, so you could offer a few cheeky bids. If the European market picks up again, prices may well sneak up once again.

The VX never seemed to attract foreign buyers in the same way, so doubt it'd be affected.

Either way, you won't lose regular car like depreciation on the Vauxhall - if you end up taking a £1k, £1500 hit over 2 or 3 years, would that be the end of the world?

Had two S1's and now on a VXT for past year and ahalf. Much as Phil says, it's actually massively faster in a straight line even on standard mapping. For me I actually seem to be able to get round corners quickeras well due to it's softer nature instilling more confidence maybe. However you do miss that last bit of pure feedback and lightweight fun the s1 offers. I'd definitely consider another S1, especially a 160 like my first one.

More liveable then, although it has wider sills and longer doors so I find it can be tighter to get into in the garage or tight parking spaces.

Thing to bear in mind is that either are quite different from your average sportscar, no-one really knows what will happen with values so best to test drive both and see what you prefer...

Oops, just to clarify, quicker on the road. On the track (not done that in the VXT) I'd take my 160 every time :-)

I think keeping a VXT standard will certainly help maintain its value. So many have been 'modified' by owners that it really is difficult to find a good unmolested one. I'm sure the same is true for S1's too. Anything other than perhaps an exhaust and/or minor remap really seems to devalue the cars.

I don't think the VX will ever attract foreign buyers as it was readily availble in LHD as the Opel Speedster.... and probably sold in more numbers than the VX.

I personally don't think they'll drop much further than they have done, but £3k doesn't really sound that much for 2 years of driving if you buy at a dealer and sell to a dealer?

The price variation seems staggering for similar cars, with some apparently nice examples around the £9k mark and others that aren't obviously much better up closer to £12k.

Interestingly many seem to be advertised as "standard car, no mods, other than stage 1 / VXR Turbo / etc."

Also seems to be the case that silver examples are more commonly available / less desirable than other colours.

Do all GRP cars suffer from this surface blistering to a greater or lesser extent?

Ha! I hope that you and Starlight are right. I'd be advertising mine as standard car other than a bit of black paint and a carpet set. Oh, and the obligatory 'sports exhaust' (surely all the originals must be rusted to dust by now)

Paint blistering was a relatively common issue on VX's, think it's caused by moisture under the gelcoat getting frozen when parked outside. Mine has escaped that as well luckily.

Details on that and the popularity of silver over on http://www.vx220.org.uk/forums/ - definitely worth a read-up for anyone seriously considering buying one.

Cheers, I am on VX220.org, not seen much comment on silver cars though, probably haven't been looking hard enough.

It's only a little joke amongst owners regarding Silver cars.
As for values, you may struggle to get a decent non cat VX for 9k.

I agree, but they are out there, and with summer coming to an end (as if it even started) there may be one or two come up.

They have very much attracted the attention of foreign buyers for the last couple of years!

They are just so expensive in mainland europe that it makes far more sence to buy in from the UK and import that a lot have gone already!

Is the conversion to LHD complicated?
