Having viewed several posts concerning 'what tyres' for an S2 Elise I am still somewhat undecided on what to go for.
In my case I am not using the car for track days and am therefore looking for a tyre that gives good performance ( in both the dry and wet ) at a fairly reasonable price.
I do not really do a lot of miles so while tyre wear is something to consider it is not necessarily of paramount importance.
I see a lot of people recommend the somewhat pricey Yoko ADO8's ( I believe the latest version is the ADO8R), although this maybe because they are suited for track use also.
As an alternative I have seen the Toyo TR1's at a more reasonable price.
However looking at the EU tyre labelling this gives a pretty poor rating regarding wet weather performance which somewhat puts me off.
With this in mind any feedback concerning a good choice for road only use would be appreciated as is any comparisons between the ADO8's and TR1's.
This does not rule out and other alternatives however so any help or advice on tyre choice and stockists that can supply them at a good price would be helpful.

Many Thanks

You put up with quite a lot of impracticality in order to have a car which handles really well. Having done so, is it worth compromising on tyres?

The AD07 / AD08 combination seems to work very well - I wish they did AD08s in front sizes. I think if Yokohama withdraw the LTS AD07 there will be a lot of people looking to move to the wider front wheel and tyre option.

I've just fitted Toyo TR-1s to the front of my 'S' car after deciding that Lotus are taking the p$ss with the pricing on the LTS tires.

I'm about 500 miles in and so far so good. Handling seems much the same at road speeds and the balance of the car seems unchanged. There might be a slight hint that the new ones are not as 'direct' as the old but to be fair they were not exactly at their best when they were swapped out.

In addition the technical guys at Toyo were helpful confirming the fitments & sizes.

I'll go with TR-1s on the rear when it's time.

I've never heard of the TR-1, but I found the T1-R to be a woeful tyre on the Elise. Utterly ruins the steering, in my experience.

Mine will need to be replaced soonish and I'll almost certainly go AD07LTS on the front and AD08 on the rear. The Yokohama tyres really are very good on the car and you seem to be able to get a set for around £500, which doesn't seem to bad too me. The other option I'm considering is some wider front rims and AD08s all round, but I wont do that without trying a car set up like that first.

AD08's all round on mine are great. Mine has wider front rim.

How does it compare in terms of steering feel and turn-in sharpness to 175 AD07s? I didn't like the steering on A048s on the S2 Exige but I don't know if that was the extra width or the different tyre type.

What width and offset rims are you using; do the tyres foul the inner arches at full lock? smile

Steering feel is fine.
The Type 25 had 240R wheels as standard so I haven't got a reference point.

How long did you run them for ?

1000 miles in and so far the current version on my 1.8 'S' seem fine for road use. No degradation in steering feel or handling. The 'S' is still the best handling\balanced Elise I've owned.

Eos - not sure whether you will have bought your new tyres by now, but if you haven't....

I've just bought two rear tyres - Yokohama Advan Neova AD07s for my S2 Elise - from Pneus Online at a very good price. Had I bought them from one of the Lotus parts suppliers in the UK I would have had to pay nearly £200 more! I had them fitted last week since when we have had a couple of days of torrential rain and they seem to give very good grip in the wet as well as the dry. So far, I'd recommend them. I already had Yoko AD07s on the front. The Yoko rears replaced the LTS Bridgestones that are no longer made.

I've never run them on my own car, but two of the cars I test-drove before buying mine had them on and I absolutely hated them.

I thought it was an OK tyre on the MX-5, but it had characteristics I would not want on the Elise.

I've got T1Rs on my S1 Elise, and I've also had them on my MX5, RX7 and BMW 323. In the dry I find they have below average cornering grip and they seem to take some time to "settle" in to the corner. Looking at the wear pattern you can see that the corners of the long thin parts of the tread pattern seem to roll over and wear on the edges.

They seem average in the wet.

I won't buy them again, and I was annoyed that the previous owner had fitted them to the RX7 and BMW. Apparently the MX5 race series guys used to buff them down to a few mm of tread to get the to work when they were the control tyre. They are definitely much better in the dry when half worn.

I've had R1Rs on the MX5 and I loved them, so they are on the list when the time comes for new tyres on the Elise.

I have just looked at the Pneus prices, very good as you say. I'm just wondering if the tyres they supply are LTS part code or just a standard model? It makes no mention in their product descripion. Thanks

I've just been to look at my tyres and they do have the LTS lettering on the sidewall.

Did Yokohama ever do the standard AD07 in 175/55R16? It's a pretty obscure size for a high-performance tyre.

Thanks for the recommendation, I have just ordered myself a set. Saved me £300-350 compared to my local dealer!

I was thinking the same, I cannot think of anything else that may use that size.
