Hi there,
I am new on this forum so i apologize if this has been posted up recently. If I just give you a bit of history about my car. Its an S1 Lotus Elise and had an engine transplant a few years ago due to the original engine failing. It soon became apparent that it had noisey tappets so they were exchanged for my original set out of the old engine. Still noisey. Now i only had the engine on the road for a couple of months back in 2011 and ended up putting it back in the garage until recently where it was taken back to the garage on a trailer to have a new battery and a service before getting it back on the road. I decided to take the plunge and have the tappets replace with brand new ones at the cost of £200 plus labour. However, the problem persists and to be honest its driving me mad. Its noisey more often than not to the point where its a bit embarrassing to drive around and I can't help but think that I may be damaging the engine if I continue to do so.

My question is has anybody on here been in this situation before and did you manage to resolve the problem and if so how? I have to be honest I have never stripped down a K series engine so am not sure of all of the components that go towards the engines makeup.

Is it a 111S? The VVC unit is renowned for often having a rattly top-end - some do, some don't and no-one seems to know quite why.

Mine got much louder when the head gasket was replaced and has been ever since, I just ignore it.

Hi there, No my engine is not a VVC. The donor engine had the head gasket changed with the newer type before it was put in the car.

I wasn't suggesting that it was anything directly to do with the head gasket. Just pointing out that my engine changed markedly when the same head and valve-gear were put back onto the same engine after some work. I've no idea what causes it; it just seems to be a question of TADTS.
