HELP PLEASE - Serious gearbox/clutch problem on Exige s2 n/a

Hello all, wondering if any of you kind people can offer any thoughts on a fairly worrying technical problem my Exige s2 n/a had today.

Was driving fairly hard but nothing unusual, suddenly ias I went to get a different gear, I could not engage any gears! Pulled over and restarted and managed to select one, felt extra notchy for a bit, went back to normal, then 10miles of mid paced driving later, same problem again. Got to where I was going. Parked up for a couple of hours. Started up fine and then a few miles down the road problem comes back, so had to park up for good.

Best attempt at describing the problem;

If you start the engine up in neutral its pot luck if you can engage any gears
If you can select first then it seems to be fine for a bit and then all of a sudden whilst driving, mid gear change it will just happen again.
Doesn't seem to be limited to any particular gears, and once it happens you can't select anything.
Strangely then if you pull over and turn off, its again pot luck what happens when you turn on again!
If you start it in first but with the clutch fully depressed it will still move forwards at a slow pace.
If you start in in neutral then, back to pot luck, either no chance and you have to turn off and try again, or its fine and you begin the fun once more :-(

All in all its a confusing! Anyone got any ideas at all?
Its been AA trucked to my local garage (not a lotus specialist at all!) but the only option under the circumstances.
Keen to see if anyone has an idea so I can try to point them in the right direction.

Would seem to be clutch, syncro or gearbox related. I'm hoping for master cylinder maybe - guessing that may be the cheapest.
Syncro - would that effect all gears?

THANKYOU for any help!

JT

Hi Smudgers
Thanks, any idea of how big a job that might be?
Strange that its intermitant - guess there's some air in the system so its hit and miss

Gear linkage cable end often breaks. (Gearbox end)

This happened on mine.

Get someone to wiggle the gearstick while you are having a look at the gearbox end.

The linkage is made of cheese.

If the car is moving forwards with the clutch fully down and in gear then I would say the master cylinder is at fault as you are not getting enough travel on the slave cylinder to disengage the clutch. However the S2 gear linkage does have its problems but can be improved with a few modifications.
