Hi All, I'M BACK!!! Well nearly back... hope to be back...anyway... 9 months of Boxster driving and I'm craving to come back to the lotus and specifically elise fold.

I'm going to see one on Saturday and hopefully do a deal that will mean I own it !!

Couple of things that you guys might be able to offer some advice on.... I would like to get a hard top for it. I've found one at eliseparts (I think) for a whopping £930.00 and another one from another company for £500 though it's unfinished and needs painting etc etc... Just wondering if anyone else has done a diy hard top or would be worth saving the cash for the ready made one?

Second... I don't know why Lotus sell Elises with silver alloys when black wheels completely make the car... no matter, is there a good place to get my silver alloys blacked up ? Or should I take a can of hammerite to them ?

All the best...good to be nearly back...

Your best bet for a hard top is probably to wait for a second-hand one of the right colour to come up on ebay. It'll still probably cost you about £500, though.

Mine has Exige wheels which are black and a little wider at the front, giving more tyre options.

They wont fit on a K-series engined car, will they? Different offset.

Or is the 111S in your profile the old one you had before the Porsche, OP?

Better off targeting what you want from the beginning. Find an Elise with black wheels and H-Top. I can understand the rush back to Lotus but after 9 months, a couple of weeks extra won't make much difference if you end up with the car with the options you really want. It'll work out cheaper too normally.

The 111s is the old one I had before the Porsche yes. I'm hoping to get a 111r but to be honest a 111 something would be absolutely fine.

thanks for all the response.

Mine has black wheels and I am changing them to anthracite. I have victory wheels but I think they get a little lost in black. They are a good looking wheel so I want them a little more visible.

I would recommend taking them to a proper wheel refurbisher though, sure a google search will throw up some local ones for you. The last set I got done cost £40 per wheel plus £30 for balancing.

Hope the car is the right one, good luck!

yeah they look great....as I said before I know its a personal preference but they just look so much nicer with black wheels... I had to let the Porsche get really dirty so its wheels went black too for me to like it better :-)

Ah sucks.... managed to get to snows only for the elise in question to be sold almost in front of me to some guy who just wants to use it as a weekend toy...

Contemplating now what to do... should I sell the boxster for what money I can get privately then hope that a red 111r, 111s, S turns up ?

Keeping my eyes peeled for any that come up in a 60 mile radius around Basingstoke.

Sorry to hear the car sold. I would broaden your search radius though, these cars are pretty rare. A few extra hours journey time is insignificant over how long you keep and enjoy the right car.

Just check that everything works (heater, air con, windows, etc.).

Obviously check that it drives as it should too, although if it doesn't, it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with it - most poorly handling Elises just need their geometry set up. An S wont feel particularly fast but should pull smoothly and linearly up to the red-line. The gearbox isn't great on any Elise but it shouldn't be woeful. The car is nearly ten years old though so perished suspension components aren't out of the question even at such a low mileage.

Check the carpets for damp, if they've got damp you'll have to dry them out and the floor might have started to corrode (although I've never seen that in an S2). Damp carpets would probably also indicate poorly adjusted windows.

Check the cables which tension the front and back of the roof for fraying where they enter the bits of metal on the end; they're prone to failure at that point and are a bit of an arse to replace.

If it's got a hard top, there should be three vanity panels, one across the top of the windscreen and one on each side at the back over the mounting bolts.

ok well as you might know I'm now the proud owner of an ardent red 56 Elise S..

Needs a bit of cosmetic stuff doing to it and I have licence to get some black wheels (it has 5 spoke lotus silver wheels atm, looking to go with 8 spoke black one's).

I'm also on the lookout for a hard top... B&C wanted about £2k for a brand new one which unfortunately is way out of my budget.

I was considering a black one too as a possible alternative to trying to get the colour match right...

Thoughts ?

Anyone got a roof or wheels they're looking to part with ?

I have some breaker contacts who I've put the word out amongst too....

Probably worth considering Exige wheels if you're going to be buying some anyway.
