Apart from the gap between hose and rad, the problem seems to be a rad with plastic end caps.

I dunno what they're made of tbh... but if it's not leaking then that's a good thing.
I've heard about plastic end cap rads and how you're supposed to replace them with an aluminium rad but I don't really know anymore than that tbh.

Wasn't that only an intial S2 design issue? Are they still shipping plastic ended radson latest cars

Nope, they still fit the crappy plastic rads even now - same rad that was fitted to S1s, Europas, all Exiges and Elises.
Seen plenty of them fail (including two go in the Alps).
First thing I did with my 59 plate Elise was to fit an ally rad.
