do you mean the indicator or wiper relay, mind you both are under the dash just left of centre, it identify between the two hold one and indicate left or right and the one that you can feel ticking the most is the indicator. Just repeat the process but put your wipers on to identify the wiper relay.

Easy

On the 111R if you stick your head, (preferably with body attached), into the passengers footwell and look up, you will see 4 relays. Two outboard, and two more towards the centre of the car. The wiper relay is the uppermost one of the inboard relays.

Is this the same on the S1 or do they have different looms?

Strange, was it new relay? did it say it was a time delay one? Are you really sure it you changed the right one? they are all pretty close together, and the tic toc feel does transmit between them all quite a bit. I know, clutching at straws here!!!!

still curious though. has anybody else fitted this relay yet, results?

Jus thought I'd add my 2 pence worth... I did both the Citroen wiper arm and the relay today (111R). The wiper arm was sort of a success - although it still suffers from the problem it did when my dad owned a couple of Citroen BX's in the 80's in that once you've used the washer, then for the next 15 mins or so when you go around right hand bends - it leaks water out of the nozzles onto your, now clean, windscreen and if you're at speed you get spray from the nozzles from the slight leak. The BX's did exactly this, so it's a know problem....anyone else found this? I also rubbed down the 4mm extension clear tubing I bought, from an aquatic shop, with sand paper and then sprayed it with black enamel paint before fitting and it doesn't stand out at all now (like it may do if you left it clear?)
The relay was a different matter, though. I got a new relay from German, Swedish and French...using the part number from an earlier post ie pt no 93610 . It didn't mention it was a variable delay one, though. I bought it and fitted it and there was no difference... still 3 - 4 wipes per wash and no amount of flick wipe / intermittant wipe playing around made any difference to the delay on the intermittant setting... still approx 5-6 seconds. One thing the new relay did do, however, was bugger up the flick wipe facility in that it didn't work every time I "flicked" it. Maybe I had the wrong relay, but it didn't work I then had the hassle of returning it and they said that their policy is not to accept back electrical items - did manage to get the helpful manager to give me a refund in the end, though. He claimed that none of the VW relays they keep do the variable intermittant function, though. If anyone can help, then please let me know as I tried to make this work.....but don't get the GSF part no. above and expect it to work, 'cos it wont! (also, new relay made VERY noisy click when using the intermittant function - which would have been annoying)

Mine's exactly the same Jon, however I prefer it to the standard washer system.

Hi,

I ordered this relay yesterday before reading that it does not work! Bit of a blow that. I've checked on some German parts sites and they list a Hella relay as well - 5WG 003 620-021. If the gsfcarparts one does not work I will try one of these and then post the results. One of the sites lists the following OEM part numbers as equivelents.

OPEL 12 38 550
SAAB 85 53 463
VW 191 955 531
VW 321 955 531 A
LIEBHERR 1 001 443 3
JOHN DEERE AZ 49 989
HAKO 90-35730-2
KRAMER 100 010 51 46
HYMER 0416073

In an attempt to help here is all I know. Well, not ALL that I know just all I know on this subject!!!!

this shows Bosch packaging of correct item, but I think its now obsolete. Part no is 0986335058
Relay shown on the right is one from scrapyard, out of a Golf Mk??

this shows details printed on the side of the Golf relay.

this shows numbers printed on end of Golf relay

this shows the place where it fits in the car, the relay that is missing is the one to replace. it is very near the centre line of the car, and the top one of 2.

Hope this helps, suggest a visit to your local scrappies.

Regards

Hi all again, right after my experiences with the german, swedish and french part, I can now tell you that I went to a couple of scrap yards today (in the first one they had about 10 golf / passat's and ALL of they were missing the wiper relay......word has obviously got out). In the second yard, the last golf I came across had the Holy Grail....there it was the lovely "99" relay. I duly gave the bloke a couple of quid and fitted it. Guess what.....IT WORKS AND WORKS A TREAT. Cheers to all who have helped - I found a lot of info on the VX220 forum (via googleing the relay details)ie where to find the relay on the Golf...under the steering column, by fuse number 8...look for the number "99" on it (if it says "19" then apparently it doesn't work). The variable delay was only fitted to the Golf/passat/vento further up the range ie if you find a basic golf then chances are it won't have the programmable delay. Good luck in the scrap yards (although anyone in Berkshire - don't bother with the big A1 slavage in Highland Avenue, Wokingham as that's where I went first only to find them all gone. Hope this helps.
Cheers, Jon
edited to add - the programmable delay is great - turn on intermittant then turn off, then after x seconds turn on intermittant again and then length of time,x seconds, is stored and this becomes the delay time the next time you turn on intermittant.(resets to 6 seconds as a default when you turn off ignition!!!) Also, the wash function is different in that if you do a quick wash, ie pull on stalk and let go quickly, then the wiper only does one sweep, but if you do a longer wash ie pull on stalk and hold, then wiper does 2, 3 or 4 wipes depending on how long you hold stalk.
Re edited to add that I'm not doubting that your relay you bought from GSF works, Jez_s.... sorry if I implied I did. I'm just posting my experiences with the one I bought.(could have been a problem with it?). Also, the manager at GSF in Reading where I bought mine said that he's pretty sure that GSF don't sell a programmable wiper relay (of course, he could be wrong). Cheers, Jez and everyone. Jon

Wierd that, My relay works a treat! if i do a short squirt i get three wipes and about five if i do a longer one, the relay i looked up was from a vw golf 93 onwards as described in a previous thread.
The only other thing i can think of is the position of the waterjets hitting the screen, i've got the passenger side set high and the drivers set low.

Ah well it'll be summer soon so who needs wipers!!
