could this be the Exige/Elise brother? the New Esprit 2006
Discussion
Hi just surfing the net a bit and I came acros this article, the new Lotus Esprit... looks very nice to me almost a step brother of the Lambo Gallardo...
But its stil not sure as the story tell's...
Enough of the 'light weight' bit, what of the 'performance'? The industry grapevine suggests Lotus has struck a deal for the Esprit to use BMW's legendary 400bhp 4941cc V8, from the E39 M5 – an engine with response and torque rust so intoxicating that some pine for it even after sampling the latest M5's 500bhp V10. In the BMW, the V8 produced 400bhp. But it's hugely tunable – Ascari has ramped peak power to 500bhp in its KZ1.
And I'm not that good in English so read more here;

and here a bit old style Lambo details ? like from the Uraco I believe, but nice!
The brits are still very good

they also say this;
'The first Lotus production car to use the VVA will be the new mid-engine supersports car,' confirms Simon Wood, director of Lotus Engineering. Performance won't merely be high but 'phenomenal', he promises...
and this;
Sources say the V8 will produce at least 400bhp in the Lotus, which would give a 1300kg Esprit a power-to-weight ratio of 308bhp per tonne – a decent advantage over the Porsche 911 Carrera S and BMW's M6. Forced induction would boost peak power beyond 500bhp for a 21st century Turbo Esprit.
Sounds nice to begin with more power and less weight then the "old" Esprit that means a faster car and I guess they will put a proper gearbox to it hope they won't make that mistake twice...

This is porbably one of a long line of sketches but it looks fantastic all the same, keeping a similar theme to the Autocar-published pictures a short while ago.
The M5 engine would be fantastic, although Lotus will no doubt have one eye on potential suitors, should there be any truth in the Proton rumours that don't seem to be going away.

From what I've heard from several people not a million miles away from the source these pics aren't far from the mark and the engine will indeed be a BMW V8.
That would be good news...I like this combo, though only "problem" is then they have yota and bmw...maybe BMW can also then provide good fast engines for the new Exige/Elise they have plenty engine's under their mark...they also could use the cooper turbo engine's and a new 4 pot M engine(from the E46 M3 engine less 2 cill like in the early days and the E30 M3, remember what those engine's did in F1 1500ps in a Exige) in the back of the Top Exige/Elise
.........ok I'm walking to fast??? but its surely possible and not a bad idea...the 4 pot(ex E46) can do 230ps reliable normaly aspirated...and is "easy" to tune...there is already lots of tuning stuf for that too

If Lotus already has a relationship with Toyota for the current 4-banger I can see more sense in sourcing the Lexus V8 as was mentioned previously, but the Bimmer one is awesome.
I can't see BMW engines being put into Elises though, too much redevelopment cost when the 'yota one is all sorted now, and the engine in the MINI is a pretty shitty Chrysler job out of the PT cruiser, blown out of it's true depth with the SC in the Cooper. Isn't there some tie-up with Pug or Citroen for the next gen MINI engine anyway?

I have to do a S Works and say that I dont like it. Ok, I do like it but not on a Lotus. It is too Lambo, too wedge and I think the back end is just silly. I dont think that is the new Esprit, I think it is some of the many artists impressions that has been going 'round.
Tony Shute said it would be a "logical design progression" and it has no styling hints from the current range.

indeed honda 2litre aside the yota unit is one of the best high revving n/a units on the market, its been out a while an there are now plenty of upgrades new cams, manifolds etc that can sort the midrange and tweek the top end for those that want more, as well as supercharger upgrades for those that want lots more, why change a great engine thats already in there an doing a great job
new mini engine will be a turbo i heard, and yes the current engine is very low tek but hey it does the job, as for the esprit its either bmw or yota v8 as to which i have a sneaky suspition its going to be the bmw unit
I know this is an old thread dug up, but I thought we had all come to the conclusion that the pics at the top of this thread are clearly photochopped Gallardos. if I had time I would dig out the pictures that they are based on (unless someone wants to do this for me?)
It does look really nice though, mainly due to the fact its a Lambo with different headlights.

it looks to much like a lambo or something.To me it doesn't look much like a Lotus at all. I don't think (or hope) that's the final design
Look at the rear end though. I just think The Spy Who Loved Me .
It's great in a retro sort of way. Needs circular rear clusters though.
