Oil

Is it true what i have been told, that the oil used should be a non synthectic (mineral oil) or semi synthectic to avoid damage to the engine if oil seeps into the conbustion chamber and causes over run? Also , how often should the oil be changed if using the car as an everyday car, doing about 10k a year?
