The headlamps on my S1 are rubbish on dip. Why should I be suprised - I heard they were originally fitted to the slightly slower Renault 4.....

Has anyone any ides regarding how to get more power/ intensity out of the original cans?

Has anyone upgraded bulbs? Or is it even possible?

Scribbler,
yes the lights are shite! however due to the fact that the elise is so low at the front this will always be a problem, I would suggest getting a set of Philips vision plus bulbs which are the best of the lower priced premium bulbs and do put out a good amount more light than standard. beyond that there are two options, the first is to shell out on some PIAA high performance bulbs (demon tweeks sell them) from £50 (!) a pair, not tried these so dont know how good they will be, the second cheaper option is put in a pair of high wattage rally bulbs which cost about £12 each, however they are not authorised for road use so this is technically illegal. the only prob with the second option is that it causes quite a load on your wiring so may result in melted wires!
Hope this helps,

I fitted a pair of 33% brighter Xenon bulbs (yellow and blue packaging - Ring??) a year or so back. Very bright and legal. IMO they work really well, giving a much whiter, stronger beam . About £17 from an A1 motorstore as I recall.

Phillips vision plus + setting the beam alignment correctly . . .

When I got my car it was pathetic, now it's actually quite good, I raised the beam height a far bit, it doesn't dazzle and I'm now perfectly comfortable at speed at night on dip . . .
