Ok as I understand it, the best time to check the oil level on my Sp6 Tuscan is immediately after shut down - so why is it today, after a wee run out with everything going well (temps/pressures etc) I check the dipstick and nothing shows!?
I KNOW there is plenty of oil in it, and last time I checked it cold I got a 'normal' reading halfway up the dipstick!! Wtf??
Advice please...

Sometimes it's quicker than that, which is so frustrating smile As long as you can hear something running down, thats a start :P

Where is Alex when you need him to come up with some gadget! Pity we can't have a little window in the oil tank smile

Check it with oil hot (60 deg c min) with the engine running.
It's consistant.

I have the same problem. I've found I get a level after giving it a couple of minutes after shutdown (usually!)

Your engines are just weird.
Back to the Chim forum for me, where the world (and checking of oil levels) is sane and normal

As the last owner of my Tuscan passed on to me, I just checked it when cold and if there is oil in it there is oil in it, worked for him for 8 years and served me well.

Im with you scott_d, check before you even crank. Oil in at set level = good to go.

Too unreliable for my liking I'm afraid guys - one minute I'm getting normal level, next it can be completely dry when theres defo oil in there??
I'll give the hot/engine running method a try...

My T350 does this.Basically the oil tank is too small.
If you leave on tickover when its hot, then check oil level, its full.
If you hold it at 2000rpm for 2 minutes then cut the engine, its empty.I always fill to max using the 2000rpm method. You will get another litre in atleast.Problem is you must then not let it idle or the tank willoverfill and you get oil into the
. Intake .
Of course how much oil is in the tank at 7500rpm?In my opinion this is why they go bang on occasions.

When cold, the oil level should just be at the bottom of the dipstick.

Jeez - so many different opinions, no wonder I cant get a consistent reading!

Is there an Sp6 expert out there who can give a definitive solution?

What Shep says, although I'd say within 20 seconds, it's basically a 2 person job:-

Park car, leave engine running
Ring wife and beg for assistance
Ring wife again and shout TODAY
Remove dipstick and clean (keep in hand)
Get wife to switch engine off
Take reading
Thank Wife

It's this easy smile

So why is that a 2 person job? Simply remove and clean dipstick, hold in hand, with driver's window wound down, reach in and turn off ignition, walk 1 yard to oil tank, place disptick back, withdraw after 2-3 seconds - read oil level. Even easier wink

To be clear, mines a Tamora, but by the time you've switched off, walked round the front of the car the oil is already draining away, like I said originally, you need to be quick.

When I bought my Tuscan (from a well known TVR dealer/garage) the service guy told me that you read the level with the engine running.

Don't forget to wear a glove so you only suffer 2nd degree burns to your arm not the hand/fingers you undo and hold the dip-stick with........
