iPhone and Satnav
Discussion
Hi,
Can anyone help advise me on the best satnav system for iPhones please? Ideally free or cheap, don't really want to pay for subscriptions or lots of updates, only need to use it in the UK too. And dont want anything thats going to eat up my net usage..
Also need a cradle, can anyone reccomend a good one please, preferably windscreen mounted.
Thanks

Navfree is ok been using it a few months now after refusing to pay tom tom renewal subscriptions.
You don't get the bells and whistles of a tom tom like advanced lane guidance and traffic re routing.
If tom tom was a 5 out of 5 " I had a tom tom go 550" , I'd give Nav free a 3 out of 5 based on functionality alone but 5 out of 5 on price,
about £4 for speed camera and removal of ads, but nothing further to pay unlike a tom tom.
.On the downside Nav free has one led me up a one was street and you will get stuck in traffic especially in London! , but it will get you
to your destination, A good but basic Sat Nav,and I'm still using it.
Here is the cradle I have this one is quality, only downside is if you have a case on your Iphone it has to come of before you use the cradle.

Thanks guys, downloaded it earlier in the week, doesn't want to find me a route though, constantly says it cannot calculate a route, I'm off to north Wales today, a journey iv never done and no sat nav at the moment so going on Google map directions that iv printed out... lets see what time I get there.
It says poor gps when it starts up so don't know if that's got anything to do with it. was doing it even with 3G.
Iv got a route set up on Google maps on the phone but I think that uses data so don't really want to set it up and run it as a sat nav for the 4 or 5 hours I'll be driving.

Skobbler seems to be the best of the freebies - but I use Navigon, which I'd rate as the best of the paid for apps.
Wouldn't bother with windscreen mounts - not yet found one I really get along with - I'd look for a semi-permanent Brodit Proclip mount instead.
I have a Griffin iPhone specific mount and it works with most of Griffin's iphone cases, so you don't have to take your phone out of the case to use it in the windscreen mount. I use the CoPilot app. Its only £20 and has been very reliable. It can struggle in the centre of London, but so does my TomTom at times.
Never tried one of the free ones. CoPilot is only £20
I bit the bullet a couple of years back and bought the Tomtom app (full europe) which IIRC cost me £49 (I had a discount voucher).
I used it with the 3GS and it wasn't that good (GPS signal wasn't great) but with the 4S it's fantastic (quicker than my wifes Tomtom Go). I get lifetime of free map updates/camera updates/etc. Only downside is the battery life on the phone is crap when it's on the satnav (but this is all satnavs on the iphone, not just tomtom).
Well worth it IMO.

Yep, another shout for TomTom here.
Never worked on my 4 but after getting it replaced after damaged it was a revelation. Working perfectly on the 5 now too.
I'm using a Navigon mount, and hoping they bring an adapter for the 5 out soon. In the meantime it's still usable by securing the top of the 5 with a laggy band.

I use a tomtom in the car but have the free waze app on the iphone for those times when I am out and about with friends and we invariably get lost (no its ok I know where I'm going we dont need satnav or a map)
Also very useful for finding the car when its parked somewhere out of the way.

I must admit, I used to have a NavMan in the car, but used to get me lost all the time, a Couple of my friends have the TomTom iPhone app the full one so i dished out for that for full europe, tbh its brilliant, I have tried a couple of the free ones but i seem to find the google maps one is pretty decent especially if you have iOS 6.
