Are cheap TomToms really this rubbish?
Discussion
To be fair I've never had a great problem with my Tom Toms, the first was a christmas present and the second I just went into Halfords and bought the one that fitted my budget. My real problem was that in researching a replacement it seemed the same major complaints kept recurring and they were all down to basic software issues.
For instance you buy one with 2gig of memory, take advantage of the 30 day free map update and discover that the new map is over 3gig but the update has already deleted your map and your are stuck with a useless box.
As it goes after a tip in another thread I've bought a refurbished Via 100 via the Tom Tom store and so far so good however I am wary of updating it just in case it does something stupid or annoying.

Rubbish!
I had a 550 which was great, excellent quality Bluetooth, read texts out etc.. Then randomly started crashing, normally when you really needed it for a road name.!
Took it back but it was then an obsolete model so has to replace with a 1000 Live. What a load of rubbish. It looks nice and that's it. The Bluetooth is unuseable it just crackles, you couldn't plan a route to a limited speed, it won't let me renew my traffic updates as it says the unit is corrupt. Now in the last 2 weeks it's started to not pick up satellites without having to reset it every time.
I'm going to go buy a Garmin.

I have a 2 year old Tomtom XXL. Apart from the memory issue, which isn't really a problem unless you're planning a major road trip around Europe, it's been flawless. Clear display, clear directions, sensible routes.
Same here.. my old TomTom One first edition gave up the ghost about 3 years ago, so Halfrauds kindly sold me a XXL.I use the european maps quite a lot and its taken me all over the UK, France, Italy and through Belgium & Holland. Its really good. the update isnt as quick as I would like, and I do find that ive missed a turn off a roundabout if the junctions are close together but aside from that, my only grievance is the orientation of the map.
The old TomTom One, the direction of travel was always upwards. The map would orientate around. the XXL likes to keep the map static and orientate the car symbol. This can get confusing as sometimes turning right on the XXL actually translates to a left turn in real life as the direction of travel has changed.
for this reason, I find it easier to use the 3D view, although I prefer to use the 2D, top down views.
