I bought a dash cam last week and unfortunately it was stolen from my car over the weekend. So, I just thought I'd remind you dash cam users that these things obviously are a target for thieves and that you should either buy one that's very inconspicuous or make sure you remove it when you leave the vehicle.

Sadly I think most are too much hassle to keep removing and refitting and as such I won't be replacing it. frown

Just ordered an SJCAM M10, after much digging to find one for a sensible price (i.e. £65 not £90+) from a UK-based seller. Hopefully should arrive on Wednesday; no doubt I'll either crash or spot the Abominable Snowman before then smile

Reviews for the M10 all seem positive. The battery life is reckoned to be around 90 minutes which ought to be enough for 90% of my regular journeys, and it's supplied with all sorts of mountings.

A word of warning if you're thinking of buying a cheap dashcam or similar gadget from eBay: Lots of sellers in China and Hong Kong are now claiming to be based in the UK so that their listings still appear when you try to filter by "UK Only". Check the contact details and feedback, otherwise you might get unexpectedly stung for import VAT and the dreaded Royal Mail "handling fee".

Looks like the E-prance 801 for me... Is it worth the extra for the GPS?

My 0801 is proving very reliable.

Been in the car >month, hard wired to the car.

Not had a single problem yet, it just WORKS.

Very happy with it, especially for the price.
+1 ...except mine is in the cigarette lighter. Cheap and does the job, no issues.

I purchased a 2nd E-Prance 0801 dash cam with a 32GB card for £47 from Amazon and delivery was next day even though I had selected free delivery, link is http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IKEVT6W (Amazon.co.uk £46.99) - I note that the same seller is also listing the 0805 dash cam with a 32GB card for £87. Seems the prices do vary quite a bit.

  • * I note that tonight an 0801 is listed with a 16GB card for £45.99 ***
As regards GPS, it's handy in that it provides automated speed and time/date data, the choice is yours. Have to say the 0801 is pretty small so blends in when fitted behind/in front??? of the rear view mirror?

It's a very simple dash cam to install, especially if you use the cigarette adapter. When you start up it records, and when you park it stops. You can hardwire it if you wish, just remember to select motion detect in the menu options if you chose this route.

In the daytime the video quality is very good, though low light and night time is poorer.

Bottom line: I've bought two of these 0801 dash cams and am very pleased with the results.

The only other dash cam I would consider buying is the Mobius as reviewed by TechMoan on YouTube - so a search on Google if you're interested, he's also uploaded a review of the 0801 dash cam.

Great choice of dash cam, and it may well be delivered tomorrow by Amazon courier even if you selected the free 'super saver' delivery option.

Remember to format the card in the dash cam using 'format' in the dash cam menu options, must say, the instruction manual supplied with my 0801 was not the best, though thankfully I had watched the TechMoan video review of the 0801 which provided much needed information on the settings, link to the video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdPHXv8Hzj8

Also, when positioning the dash cam on the windscreen, tilt it slightly downwards so that it records some of the dashboard and bonnet rather than skywards - unless you are looking to record any low flying aircraft as well as motoring offences! reason being is to reduce the burnout when the camera compensates for the bright sky. As for the white writing on the front of the camera, I used a black marker pen to black out the writing.

I purchased my first E-PRANCE 0801 dash cam in Sept 2014 and it's worked flawlessly ever since.

Quick questions -

Have a Transcend Drive Pro 200 in the front. Want to add a rear camera now. Options are:

Cheapest - buy a 801 and put in the back or front, swapping the Transcend if people think the 801 is better
More expensive - buy a 803

So is the 801 adequate for rear, or better than the Transcend anyway? Or is the 803 so much better than both that it's worth the extra to put it in the front?

I've not seen video clips from a Transcend dash cam so can't comment on whether it is better or worse, however, you can download and view a few video clips recorded in my E-Prance 0801 - nothing exciting to see, clips are just to give you an idea of the video quality in the daytime.

Links to download v0801 video footage from the Mega website are shown below. All are 1 min in length (100MB each).

From what I can gather, the 0803 and 0805 offer better quality video in low light and night-time than the 0801 so it just depends on whether this is important to you.

The 0801 is pretty much bullet-proof unless you buy a cheap fake.

I purchased my first 0801 back in September 2014 and have had no problems with it whatsoever.

The 0806 has been released which offers even better video performance and has two micro SD slots capable of accepting 128GB each (possibly more). I believe that there are a few teething problems at the moment with a few of them, especially with the first batch that was produced, so would recommend you buy local rather than from China.

I'm looking to by a dash camera system but want to be able to record from the front and rear. I want this feature for potential accident recording so no point in just front only.

It will be fixed in the car and I will be hard wiring it.

Please can someone shove me in the best direction?

Thanks in advance

I'm having two dash cams hardwired in the wife's car today next week by my friendly auto electrician, am putting a 0806 in the front and a 0801 in the rear - will let you know how I get on later today.

If you're not bothered about video quality in low light or night-time then just go for a nice and straightforward E-Prance 0801. I bought mine from Amazon for under £50 though that didn't include the hardwire kit. Video samples are in my post above as is the link to Amazon.

BTW, I have no connection with any of the sellers.

EDIT: job being done next week!!!

Does anybody know the cost of getting a dashcam (0801) hardwired into the front of the car by a professional?

Thanks for the input smile

I want to get a good quality capture day and night really.

You mention you are getting an 0801 for the rear...is there a difference in the 0801 and the 'straightforward E-Prance 0801' you refer to?

Thanks again
