Replacement Mobius M2 arrived (from a different supplier) and it's a different experience.

Connects first time, no issues with microSD cards - to the extent it makes me wonder if the first was either a fake, or FUBAR'd.

Who'd you get it from Podie and what are the main improvements over the original Mobius?

Purchased from http://www.minidvcameras.co.uk as was my Mobius 1. Great service both times.

It's better built, and the mount acts as a heatsink so mounts better / lower profile. It can also rotate 90 degrees for a different mounting orientation.

Has a different codec so you can get more on a card, and up 120fps if you want.

Quite possibly a fake, there were quite a few fake Mobius 1 and a few of the resellers had pages on how to spot a dodgy one. The advice for those was to only buy from the recommended list of resellers in the 2nd post here: https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/mobius-suppo...

So I guess that would go for the 2 as well.

The first one came from Spy tec, which was "fulfilled by Amazon" so I thought I should be ok.

Returned for refund...

At least you are sorted now.

What is the USB connector on the Mobius 2? It doesn't look standard.

Thanks. Looks squarer in the pictures. Not sure what to do first, order one or book an appointment at Specsavers hehe

hehe

General observations are that it feels more sturdy, lower profile mounting (the mount is also a heatsink), the LEDs appear better, the buttons are more pronounced and things are more clearly labeled.

The lens is wider than the standard Mobius 1, but not as wide as the "C" lens (based on footage) and the quality of the image seems a little better, although I've only tried it on the default settings thus far.

My Mobius 2 arrived from MiniDV today. First impressions are good. It is reassuringly tiny (why anyone would want something the size of a loaf of bread stuck in the middle of their windscreen I just don't know), has a quality feel to it and the picture quality is excellent. It was also a doddle to set-up. The only issue is the lower profile mount isn't low enough for me so I've fashioned a mount from bits of it which I'll stick to the underside of the mirror housing. I just need to fit the capacitor and hard wire it in at the weekend now biggrin

Where are you guys ordering the Version 2 item from?

Low and behold I had rather bad road rage incident just this afternoon and the camera (Mobius) hadn't been working.

3 years isn't bad I suppose so a replacement needed and I'll have a go at replacing the battery and memory card on the old one and put it in the rear window if working.

I got my v1 from banggood.com, they also have the v2 and are an offical reseller.

Are most of these dash cams hard wired into the car?

I have a company car and am not allowed to change the wiring or mess about with it. Is there such a thing as a decent dash cam that can be temporarily installed and perhaps run from the cig lighter socket?

Most if it all will run from a cigarette lighter socket using a usb adapter like you use for your phone.

The issue is if you want some sort of parking guard feature some cars don't power the cigarette socket when ignition is off, so you have to power it a different way (hence people hard wire).

I don't use any sort of parking guard, the cigarette socket in my car powers up when the car is unlocked and powers down a few minutes after being locked. I've got the mobius set to start recording when powered up and to stop when powered down.

It'd be worth checking that any camera you are interested in has a similar sort of feature and the car does/doesn't power down cigarette sockets so you can figure out how you will run the camera.

It would be good if manufacturers could have a USB socket up by the rear view mirror.

If you want to hard wire it, just use one of those piggy back fuse holders and remove it when you get rid of the car.
