Did a stealth install whilst retrofitting an autodim mirror to my RX8 recently

I put some black vinyl on the windscreen first with a circular cutout for the camera lens, it's really hard to see even if you're looking for it.
What's the camera used there

Cheers

Hi, it's a Dome G90s https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/dome-g90c-g9...

It's a pretty good camera, 2304*1296p resolution with gps but it is showing it's age slightly being 18 months old, there's successors available that have better low light capability.
I remote mounted the lens using an 20cm extension lead meant for a mobius as the pin count is the same for most dashcams.

Warning....police report dash cams are getting nicked from cars in my neck of the woods.
Mine got stolen from my car 18 months ago, so they're definitely a target!

Haven't bothered replacing it but starting to look again for something that's a bit more covert. I really can't believe that by now no one seems to make one that's integrated or discrete. How hard would it be to make one where the main body is hidden elsewhere in the car with the camera lens itself on a long cable that you can descretely stick to your rear view mirror?

Do any manufacturers offer it as an option on new cars yet? As surprised they are not seeing the profit opportunity.

That Citroen install is along the lines of what I'd like to see more manufacturers offer as I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to keep my the interior as OEM looking as possible, I hate having phone cradles, chargers, sat navs or a dashcam hanging down with power leads attached etc cluttering up the cabin. biggrin

BMW do a dealer fit option but it's just their own branded dashcam basically so no more integrated than anything else, and its not cheap.

For a more integrated look there's these dash cams that support certain mainly German models

They look a nice neat solution but I'm not sure of their recording quality or reliability, anyone tried them?

Not knowing these also existed for the A4 at the time, I fitted a Mobius with the lens remotely fitted into the housing on the back of the rear mirror and the mobius itself up in the sunglasses holder about 6" away by the interior light. The install works well but unfortunately the Mobius seems to generate a bit of RF interference which knocks out DAB a lot of the time, so I tend not to have it powered on now.

I'd heard that some BMW's come with them from the factory? Watching a TV based in Norway I spotted a GM Insignia which had a factory installed dashcam

Unless they've released a new version very recently the OEM BMW option looks like a normal camera circa 2010 and is very noticeable in the windscreen and cost £500 in 2015, it's probably cheaper now but image quality won't be a patch on dedicated non factory camera's costing the same.

I've bought, but not yet fitted (I only want to take things apart the once, so it's waiting until my stereo goes in), the hardwire kit for it, which claims to have low voltage detection. So if parked for a long time, the camera should stop recording, but you'll still be able to start your car.
Quick update for anyone who finds it useful:

This is now fitted to a permanent live. I was sat in the car with the doors open for most of 2 days and although I switched the dome light off, the puddle lights are on all the time so the battery was getting a bit of work to do. Then when I got the stereo in and the car back together and turned the ignition on to check things over and so the heater fans came on along with everything else within a few seconds I heard the little tune the camera makes when it turns off. Realised what I must be doing to the battery, took the chance to see if there's enough left in the battery to start the car... yes smile Then left it running while I sorted the rest!

So, the low voltage detection seems fine.

In other news, the camera is still on after work and each morning, so it's not pulling too many Ah overnight, at least. I've been commuting all week since fitting though so no chance to see how much longer it lasts yet.

TL/DR: fitted, works.

I'm going to take a hammer to my 0806.

I've had nothing but trouble, has it replaced twice and also tried new cards in it. Yet it only records when it wants and often switches off for no reason.

Yesterday, an accident happened right in front of the car at a junction. Four people hurt, one air lifted. Police needed witnesses and were very interested when I told them about the Web cam. But the fecking thing had switched itself off.

Useless. Don't ever buy one.
This accident is now a fatal accident enquiry. One of the drivers is saying something which........doesn't sound right. If only the fking 0806 hadn't shut itself down....

I've had my 806 for 15 months and it's been fine. Had one hiccup when it stopped recording, but found the sd card to be at fault. The internet would suggest the early batches were crap, but it may just be luck of the drawer

Looks like a dead battery fault, according to Internet. Might have a go at swapping it.

Well at £100+ it wasn't cheap!

So in the market for a new one now for the Aston. What is the current leader(s)? Tempted by an Aguri Fusion 100 to combine my speed camera detector with my dash cam rather than running one of each.

Blackvue (or similar form factor) tucks up nicely behind the interior light pod. I do get quite a few reflections from the ski slope though, but don't really want to start messing about with polarisers and so on. Trim tool is useful for pushing the wire out of sight.

Happy to live with a few reflections for a neat fit.

No, apologies, I thought the models you were discussing were around £40.

Indeed, once over the £100 mark you'd expect to get something reliable.

From memory my blackvue was around £160 2 years ago. So far I've needed it 3 times to produce evidence for 3 accidents I've witnessed and touch wood it's produced the goods on all occasions.

I've still not gotten round to fitting my DDPai yet, despite the hardwire kit arriving some weeks back..
