Arrived and set up but really disappointed with the picture quality so far. I'm hoping it's me and some settings, but if not, it'll be going back to Nextbase
Which version did you buy, the 1k (1080p), 2k (1440p) or 4k (2160p)?
It's the 1k but apparently I've been downloading the low res clips so trying again with higher res...
That's a bit better..

My view is get the 4K but run at 1080 as the hardware will be low stress, making for very smooth high frame rate video.

Or get the 4k and see if it will run high-strees mode 1080p/240fps so you can capture those usually blurred number plates biggrin

I'm being shown an £11.70 "4.2-inch Large Rear View Mirror Tachograph Dual Lens HD 1080P Automotive General Purpose Video Recorder" if anyone fancies a dabble.

I think I'm going to stick with a conventional mirror and try and run front and rear cameras off an Android head unit once I work out what's what.

I have a spare DR02d knocking around but I need a head unit anyway and want to try and update to something easier to get footage off.

Has anyone tried hardwiring a dash cam into a map light feed wire rather than right around the screen down to the fuse box or back of cig lighter?

Powerful uk have a video guide and sell a wiring loom for a Freelander 2 as one example.

Then one for a Fiesta, same interior light.

Maybe there is something there. They have a similar video for a dual cam BlackVue install in a new Defender, again I think they take power from the overhead cabin light.

Must be able to figure out something from these. I guess it depends on detail design of overhead light and the actual power supply which needs investigation.

Certainly in America they have companies making short power take off adaptors/cables from the rear viewing view mirrors. Many cars now have power to the rear view mirror for auto dimming and compass.

I know the Skoda Octavia and the new Fabia have usb C outlets in the rear view mirror as options maybe even standard in some cases. Not sure about other models.

In my opinion this should become more widely available as it removes the need for a voltage adapter, simply need a short(ish) C to mini USB cable. OK there is an issue if you need permanent power even when parked and protection from flattening the battery.

The new nextbase iq 4k is utterly pathetic. Most of it doesnt work.

I saw the team last night here at CES in las vegas. I made my views clear. There is apparently a new firmware coming end of january which *should* make the rear camera work. And another drop in march which should enable the missing features

At the moment, it is a very strong "do not buy"

My Citroen C3 has a dash cam built in, Citroen call it ConnectedCAM. As far as I know Citroen were the only ones to do it, I don't think there's a similar option for Peugeot. Is a USB near the mirror going to be the way they go now?

This is exactly right. My Octavia arrived last week and I ordered a Garmin Mini 2 to slot into the USB-C port on the panel behind the rear-view mirror. Only downside was none of the cables that came with the Garmin were USB-C so I've ordered a short (well sort of: 30cm!) cable from Amazon. We'll see how it goes when I try to install it properly tonight!

I'd get onto the EU and demand Garmin recall all their products and retrofit them with USB-C ports...as that's what the EU said all devices had to use from now on!

wink

New cable arrived so here's a couple of images of how tidy the set up is using the USB-C slot in the Octavia.

How is th Garmin Mini 2? I'm debating going for one of these or just a cheaper Amazon jobbie, like the Euki 4k dash cam. The Garmin looks nice and subtle, no screen either which is a requirement for me. Would be interested to know your thoughts on it.

Hi All

Would really appreciate some input.

Story so far is that I fitted a FitCamX in my wife’s car, which included a rear view mirror trim replacing the original. Nice and neat. Last week someone reversed into her, and the cottage saved the day. This prompted a purchase of a BlackVue 590x for my car!

Can I ask whether anyone has used non BlackVue SD cards? I have an issue with buffering when watching back footage on the phone, so called support and they advised very strongly that non genuine cards can cause the camera issues, possible overheating I believe. Apparently SanDisk are the worse……

Genuine are silly money!

Finally, anyone permanently switched off audio recording and also motion detection for parking mode - happy with impact, but don’t really need to record cars passing etc?

Thanks everyone.

Dash cams can certainly be very picky with SD cards.

I’ve got a Nextbase, so no direct experience of Blackvue, but I bought a Sandisk “High Endurance” and it caused no end of problems - frequent lock-ups and often just not starting to record at all more often than not.

I changed it for the Sandisk “Max Endurance’ at twice the price and it’s been fine so far, although I’ve not used it through the summer yet!

If it doesn’t work, I’ll just go for the Nextbase card next time. The 64GB Nextbase card as about the same price as I paid for the 256GB Max Endurance card, so I’ll go for the smaller capacity as I don’t really need more.

They are definitely silly money though. I always buy what I consider to be good quality SD cards for other devices, but they are a fraction of the cost of the Nextbase ones, and the Blackvue are more still.

I too have Nextbase in 2 of our cars, and bought the high-price Nextbase cards.
I figured the overall cost wasn't a lot in the context of the whole car .... so didn't bother trying to save £30 on the card, which was planned to last several years.

I think that is the best policy. I dug in a bit when Nextbase Support blamed my card not supporting a minimum write speed of 48 MB/s whilst recommending their own card which only supports 30 MB/s and has ‘V30’ written on the front of the card!

In reality, having their own card is only way of getting any level of support if the dashcam itself goes wrong as they’ll always blame the third party curd for any issues

I use Integral cards in about 4 dash cams never had a problem in about 5yrs with daily use on all cars, previously used a mix of sandisk, kingston and they would always corrupt
