Having read a little about the M6+ am I correct in saying that it's not as simple as 'plug and play' as you might expect? i.e. there is no screen on the unit so you have to pair with your phone and use an app?

I guess I'd like something that:
-I can simply carry with me and attach to a mount in the car quickly
-Turns on automatically (when plugged into USB) and/or I simply press a button
-Loops recordings
-Ideally no stupid apps or gimmicky things - I'm happy to plug the SD card into my comp to view any footage
-I can connect to USB charger, wires over the dash aren't a problem (i.e. I'm not fussed about hard-wiring the unit)

Any suggestions or does this not exist? Looks like the Street Guardian SG9665GC might be the one for me? (although it's well over my initial £100 limit)

Does anyone here run a Street Guardian SG9665GC? There is a very similar version made by Spy Tec (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spy-Tec-A118-C-Capacitor-Dashboard/dp/B00SK8B47W) which is about a third of the price...I wondered if anyone has also tried one of these? Google yields little by way of a comparison.

My dodgy Mobius 2 came from there - proceed with caution...

I've just bought an 0826 with the hardwire kit for well under £100, looks like a decent bit of kit, hopefully get it fitted in the car next week.
Where did you buy from? China?
Nope, UK seller through Ebay

got myself an Ambarella Mini 0806 a while back.
Picture quality good, GPS good idea (can't say I've used the GPS info).

Need to install hard wire kit or have plugged in all the time, as battery lasts about 5 minutes before unit switches itself off.

Are there any detrimental effects to hardwiring a dash cam & having it in parking mode overnight?

Previously bought my wife a mobious dashcam, that quickly stopped working frown

Last weekend decided to look online, and a few seemed to rate the Halfords offerings. So bought a Netbase 312GW.
Easy to install, and set up.
Had a look at the picture quality on my PC and looks fine.
The Nextbase 312GW is Which's highest rated dashcam, all things considered. I went for a budget one (the 101 Go) and have regretted it as the quality isn't all that great. I'm seriously thinking about a 312GW.

Will try and upload some day and night time footage later this week.
Although im sure theirs plenty on youtube already to compare with.

As far we are still happy with it. So can only recommend.

Thought I'd pop in again to mention I just had excellent service from Proofcam - sent in my camera as it wasn't recording ... turned out to be user error. No cost, and a new cable just in case all FoC. Didn't even ask for receipts etc.

I used to have my front and rear facing DVR’s coming on with ignition on, I found some times I wanted the DVR’s to still record but didn’t want the engine (or ignition) still on.

As I drive my Lotus with lights on 100% of the time I wired my two DVR’s to come on with lights on (side lights or dipped/main beam same thing)

here’s my wiring diagram

on our daily drive, where I or my wife don’t always have our lights on in daylight, I’ve wired the DVR in this car like this:

this way the DVR will switch on if only the lights are on or if only the ignition is on (or if both are on too)

  • this wiring works for us, but it may not for you so if you plan on copying it do so at your own risk

So, without wading through 186 pages, what's the current thinking on the best dash cam with the following features:
-Small, light, compact
-USB power (not intending to hard wire) / battery
-Card size >32Gb (I presume this is needed for recording HD video >five hours)
-<£100
-Decent footage, night and day
-Easily removable

Help!
I use a Mini 0806. It's small and you can turn the screen off by default if you find it distracting. It's easy to slot in and out and takes whatever card you want to throw at it.
Quality is good in both day and night use and not expensive. It's not USB and although I didn't hard wire mine, I managed to hide the wires behind the centre console and plugged it into the cigarette lighter in the back of the car so it wasn't visible in the front and the also leaves the front charger free.
I've got a 0806. It's been replaced twice FOC so this is my third. Different cards as well.

Plus: small discrete hard wired in.
Cons: useless. Switches off and back on at will. Records only when it wants. Sometimes locks up and you can't switch it off ping ping ping ping until the internal battery goes flat (stuff it in the glovebox).

Had a muppet nearly run me off the road last night. Today, checked the footage. Nothing recorded and only a few random minutes recorded from the last few hours driving.

Very disappointed so I'm now looking to replace it with......?

I had an 0803 or whatever it was and it felt a bit cheap. Nicely non-obtrusive but I would happily pay £300 - £400 for a decent product rather than some of the tat that seems to be on the market. Ironically the pricier ones often seem a bit bulkier :-(

Its funny, cos the el cheapo SJ4000 action camera I have feels a sturdy bit of kit pretty much to the same build quality as my old GoPro.

I like the look of the next base stuff but I hate the fact the mounts are so big! I want to mount something discretely behind the mirror as I couldn't stand having some big thing stuck to the screen in full view!

I had a similar issue. Ended up with a Mobius 2 / M2. It doesn't have the 'features' of a dash cam (screen, save button, parking mode etc.) but is about the smallest form factor HD quality camera you'll find.

This is perfect in every way, but the reviews on amazon and comments on YouTube all say it goes faulty after a short time.
I would buy something like this instantly if it was reliable. Does anyone know of a similar alternative?

They are pretty much all unreliable or stupidly awkward to use, that's the problem. I don't know what the difficulty for the manufacturers is, but there clearly is one.

I've had one for a year plus and it's been fine. But then there's always one!

How hard is it to hardwire a dashcam on a MB W211 2008 E Class Avantgarde?

Are there any idiot proof step by step instructions out there?

No different from any other car I'd of thought.
I assume it's just a live and earth either switched or perm depending on if you want it to work while parked
