Tomtom V1 update

I have had to resurrect my old tomtom v1 and am finding it does not recognise half the roads I'm on due to new roads/re-alignments etc
Can anyone tell me how to update the thing please?
Bear in mind I am not great at computing stuff so please be as clear as poss - pm me if info is not for general consumption...
