worth getting a map update?

I have a pretty basic Garmin unit with pre loaded US/Canada maps, and european maps on an SD - probably 2008 edition.

We are taking a trip to France this summer and I thought it might be worth getting a map update. Looking at the garmin site, I'd be looking at £75 for updated europe maps on an SD card. So now I am wondering it it might be worth getting a new fairly basic unit with current maps, for the same or not much more cash. I am guessing that a newer unit might have other benefits in addition to new maps. I note that some devices are offering updated maps for life .

Any thoughts / recommendations ?

I'm in a similar situation. I'm thinking stick the old nav on ebay and just buy a new one.
