Realise most of this is for in vehicle devices but was hoping the usually excellent PH pool of direct experience and knowledge can help.

Looking for a hand held device for use on walks / day treks and so on.

Have tried using phone app and have run into problems with data signal. Maybe using the wrong app / map.

Anyway would prefer one that can use OS mapping, especially in explorer scale. 1:25,000

Would like one where can prepare a route and upload. Most of the ones in places looked already are Garmin and that means use of BaseCamp and I bloody hate Base Camp. But if that's what I have to use then will just have to suck it up.

Budget? Good question. Nothing definite but guess over 500 might raise an eyebrow.

Ok folks over to you.

Memory map adventurer models may be of interest to you. Never used them but they look pretty decent.

Mines quite old now, I have a Garmin Dakota 20 with OS maps. Some of the more up to date units have much better display/graphics.
