I currently have an Origin B2 in my TVR and a Pogo (complete with black screen) in my BMW. Both work okay and the data is updated weekly on my pc.

I would ideally like to replace the Pogo and have tried the following:-

CamerAlert - This works very well with warnings thru the cars Bluetooth. Problem is that their database is dreadful, warning at every site a speed camera or plod have ever set up a trap so too intrusive.

RoadPilot - Still trying this one but concerned that the sound only goes thru the phone speakers, no Bluetooth.

Road Angel - Considered this but I don't like the look of the unit and it wont back up on a Mac.

Anybody have any alternatives?

It's the best database there is, better a false positive than no warning at all, you can always ignore it once you see the coast is clear.

Well that depends on your definition of 'best database'. For me they have included every location there has ever been a trap with the result that the warnings are sounded constantly which I find too intrusive. The database used by the Pogo (same as Road Angel) is about right. Of course these things are always a compromise.

The Pogo database shows only one of eight mobile sites near where I live, they're all used regularly. CamerAlert shows them all.

Think we will have to agree to disagree on that one.

That still leaves me with the problem of how to replace the Origin B2 in the TVR. There is no Bluetooth and I doubt I would hear alerts thru my phone so CamerAlert won't do the job. Road Angel would be the obvious solution but as I said it is not compatible with my Mac for updates.

I ended up with a Road Angel as a warranty replacement for my Pogo, it isn't as good, but database updates are over the air, so I only rarely need to plug it into a PC for firmware updates. The main reason I didn't get a Road Angel in the first place was the lack of Mac support, now it seems like there isn't a choice.

Does the CamerAlert run okay without using mobile data? I tried using Waze but it took all of my data allowance.

I'm also coming to the conclusion that Road Angel is the only option. Why do you say that it is not as good as the Pogo?

Also does the Road Angel measure your average speed through SPECS as the Pogo did?

I preferred the interface on the Pogo, touch, rather than buttons which need a good press (often dislodging the device from its magnetic base). The Pogo also doesn't have the annoying e call feature, which activates if you take a roundabout too fast. Most annoyingly I can't update the Road Angel from my Mac.

The Road Angel does show the average speed between specs cameras.

Thanks for the help. I just ordered a Road Angel as thats seems to be the 'best of a bad lot' right now. They are on special offer at £130 for the de-lux (including hard wiring kit ect) today from Road Angel itself.

Same here .... Since my RP Micro finally died, there's nothing else that comes close IMHO.

So my Road Angel has been fitted and its every bit as ugly as I expected. frown

Let's hope it works well & keeps me out of trouble.

Do you know if it's meant to automatically power down when the ignition is turned off? At the moment mine stays on tho I haven't explored all the instructions yet.

HI, There is an RAC Dash Cam that now also has speed camera alerts built in. Records in super HD as well. The speed camera updates are not updated daily, more likely 2 or 3 weekly but they are free so no ongoing costs. There are also discounts from some insurance companies if you have a dash cam fitted, so it seems like the way to go.

Just scroll through the menu and you can personalise most settings.... Including a 'hard wire' setting which powers it down 20 seconds or so after the ignition is switched off

Yes I found that but if I use it the device keeps shutting down & te opening while I'm driving. There's a fault in there somewhere.

I thought I would drop into this chat because after this weekend I want to ditch my RoadAngel GEM for good. Its been a disaster, faulty, tech support have taken 2 months to resolve an issue, now they have messed up on my subscription and I am feed up with a device which is ugly and awkward to use. I was really hoping this morning to find a new device online but I really am struggling. I loved my old Road Pilot Micro but it seems like when Road Angel got bought and now called Road Angel Group, its all gone to pot. I am looking at the Pogo, are they an offshot of the original Road Angel company?

Pogo was the very best IMO. Unfortunately there was a manufacturing defect and ALL of the screens went black. They were then bought by Road Angel.

Is Waze not better than a Gem? I'm thinking about selling Gem as never use it and Waze seems to be easier to have up...

I would have thought there would be an app which out performs these hardware devices by now?
