I have a Garmin Sat Nav and I want to hard wire the power lead so that I don't have the wire hanging down in the way.
I have got the power lead with the lighter plug on it, I have cut the plug off and there are 3 wires...
Red..Live
Black..Earth
white ?? what does this wire do please ? can I assume it is important or maybe not ?

Cheers.

Congratulations - you've probably cut the 12v to 5v "transformer" off and are left with the USB connector's internal wiring. Which model are you trying to modify ?

Thanks for the quick reply. It's a Garmin Nuvi...
all I have done is cut the fag lighter plug off, I still have the voltage reducer, I was just hoping to have 2 wires !! I do sometimes use a USB lead and that doesn't have the reducer on it !!

If it's anything like my Nuvi, all the voltage transformation is done in the plug and the three wires are the power lines to the USB connector. Can you post a photo of what you have please ?

You should have bought a blank 12v socket and wired that into the car somewhere hidden. Then you can plug in any type of 12v lead without cutting (and it's easy if garmin change their power leads on newer models)

I did exactly the same thing a few years ago with my Nuvi... turns out there's some kind of voltage reducer built into the cig plug and the Sat Nav didn't like having 12v thrown up it...

Cost me a fortune to send it away for repair!!
Ever since then I've just hard wired a socket in a hidden location behind the dash and plugged in normally.
