Morning all,

I don't venture in here very often, so sorry if this kind of thing has been discussed many times before.

I've got an 06 R32 with factory Nav (not sure of the model code, it's got a 6 CD changer in the arm rest if that helps).

The Nav is next to useless to be honest so I've ended up using Waze on my phone. Then I had a thought the other day, there must be some Android head units available that don't looks too silly. Off I go to look on ebay, it appears there are a few.

Does anyone have any experience with something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Unit-Wifi-For-VW-PAS... ?

I think it looks OK (interior style wise).

Cheers

Can't comment on that unit as some of the Chinese vehicle-specific Android units get very mixed reviews but I've just fitted a Parrot Asteroid Smart to my wife's Boxster and I'm really impressed with the unit. Bought a vehicle-specific surround and fitting kit and set an appropriate splash screen and it looks very OEM. Installed Waze on it over the default Nav app too.

I had a Parrot Asteroid Mini and it was very good. Some of the cheaper Android units are very laggy. I'd spend more money on a decent brand and try to have a play with it first.

Hi,

Another Parrot Asteroid Smart owner here! in a BMW E39 with regards to the car it's in.

The cheap chinese replacement type units are usually problematic, with little to no aftersales care and support. Sometimes there is communications with the 'reseller' which can help, but overall, they're a gamble as you 'might' get a good working unit that crucially stays working longer term, or chances are high(er) that you'll get a unit that arrives with issues or develops them and more over time. Some users report they've been fine, many others report all sorts of issues/problems/frustrations. Over on one of the BMW forums, one user is currently reporting smoke coming out of his unit! it's still kind of working and then sent back for repair to china at £55 cost to him and continues to emit smoke now he has it back! the unit 'sort of' works as well.

My recommendation would be to go to your local reputable car audio dealer and choose a premium brand unit which are much higher quality in every single way compared to the units coming out of china.

Cheers, Dennis!

I think this unit might be worth a look.
